would they be good studio monitors to buy? they do seem quite cheap, but they are actually at the top of my budget at the moment, so if you suggest anything else which you think is better then make sure they are not more expensive!
If you do think I should buy them, what exactly do I need to connect them to my xenyx x1222usb and how.
cheers :)

Strictly my opinion. But those are glorified computer speakers. The difference between good studio monitors and regular computer speakers is that Studio Monitors are designed to accuratley portray the audio while Computer speakers are made to PLEASINGLY portray the audio. I've listened to those, and they augment the sound by pushing the lows and losing some high mids. Makes most music sound a little better, but because you will hear lots of Bass and not alot of high mid, your gonna end up putting too little bass and too much high mid in your mixes.

IMHO save up for KRK rokit 5's. They are $300 bucks a pair, but they are worth the investment.

is there really nothing cheaper than that? I would say £150 ($237) at an absolute max - I also need to buy a decent pair of headphones. my sennheiser HD 201's broke so I was thinking of these

The M Audios are better than computer speakers, but if you are going to use them as studio monitors you will want to do your mixes, burn them to disc (or to thumbdrive) and then listen on as many different systems as you can to get a better idea of what your mix will sound like elsewhere. Also, listen to good sounding CDs you are familiar with through the monitors to get a better idea of the sound balance they produce. I use M Audio studiophile 3s, some Gateway computer speakers and some old Advent speakers (hooked up to an old Sony amp), then still brun to disc, listen on living room stereo, truck, etc.

'Real' monitors like the Rokits won't produce great results if your listening room is not treated, anyway.

ah okay, the room I have is hardly treated, so I think I will go with the av 40's, get the headphones, and then my next step may be to treat the room. Although it'll be a while before I get enough money

Mike is definetly right. Best speakers in the world won't do a bit of good in an untreated room.
