Folks,

I've almost got my pennies saved up enough to get a Lynx One. I've never installed a soundcard. Is there someone here that could walk me through the installation when I'm ready?

Thanks,
Rusty K

If noone else volunteers, Ill take a crack at it...Ive installed a few sound cards with no hangups, but someone with more technical PC knowledge would be useful in the event you run into some types of problems Ive never come across....

It's REALLY easy, trust me.
No one is more phobic of the INSIDES of a computer than me, just thinking about it brings on a cold sweat, & sense of dread , but when it came right down to it, it was very simple.
It typically involves opening up your tower, [power off please] physically placing the card in an open slot [PCI], booting up the computer, which will usually invoke the NEW HARD WARE installation wizard [new hard ware found], this will guide you through the installation of the drivers, set up your card to communicate with whatever software you're using, and record Barbara Striesands new C.D!
All of this will be detailed thoroughly in the documentation included with your Lynx, along with anything else important, so don't sweat it.

Is it going to be the only sound card on your system?
If so, there should'nt be any issues at all, if you plan on running it with another card, you could run into problems with IRQ'S [someone like Slackmaster could splain this stuff much better to you than I].
Let us know how things go, I,m sure someone else can chip in their 2 cents.

Thanks guys,

I'm feeling much better all ready. I do have a SBLive already there and I have heard of people running two sound cards. That's a good quesiton. Is there any advantages to running two? And if so how do I set the two up?

Again thanks so much for the help.

Well...

There are benefits of keeping the SB in there with the Lynx...

If you have a set of crappy computer speakers to hook up to the SB then you can use the SB as a second reference on your mixes. Always a good thing.

It's nice to be able to route system crap through the SB. Things like ICQ, games, system sounds etc. Or for instance if you have fancy 5.1 speakers, you're probably gonna want to leave them on the SB.

The downside is your SB is taking up a PCI slot. If you have lots to spare, no problem, but if you don't then future expansion is limited.

Hope this helps.

The Lynx One card (of which I own) is VERY simple to install.

No matter which OS you are using, this is the procedure.

1- Turn off your computer.
2- Install the card into a PCI slot.
3- Reboot your computer.
4- When windows "detects new hardware", you will get to a screen where you can install the driver for that software. HIT CANCEL!!!!
5- Run the .exe application that comes on the floppy disk that comes with your Lynx card. This will install the driver, AND the Lynx's mixer to your system.
6- Reboot your system.

Your Lynx card will work PERFECTLY!!!

I have never had a device that had such an easy install to it as the Lynx One card! Their drivers work perfectly!

If you have ANY questions, please feel free to email me, OR, Dave Hoatson (one of the owners of Lynx) who answers most every tech support inquiry! He is a nice guy who is very patient.

A very GREAT choice in a sound card by the way! :)

Some great advice here. I installed my Lynx in about 2 minutes ... was incredibly easy and worked perfectly right away.
I would take the SB out, just to avoid any conflicts .. but the only other reason I can think of to leave it in would be to be able to play your CDs through it. The Lynx doesn't have an internal I/O for your CD-rom drive ... you could probably rig something with the external I/O, although I never tried ... it just never was a big deal to me.
The Lynx is an excellent card, by the way ... I think you're gonna love it.

One thing to remember; with the computer's power off but the power cable still connected ground your hands on the computer's metal power supply casing to get rid of static electricity. After you have grounded them you can unplug the PC. Static can kill certain PC components. You could also buy a wrist strap that keeps you grounded constantly.

Damn guys,

This sounds simple enough. I'm buying on Monday. One thing BigKahuna brought up though I need to clear up. If I pulled the SBL I would still be able to extract from a CD right? If this is true then I really don't care about the CD play feature either.

Thanks a mill for all the help.

You can still rip CDs ... and extract the data from them ... you just can't play audio CDs in real-time because the audio output of the CD-rom can't be plugged into the LynxOne (like it can on most consumer cards). There's just no input for it.
The CD drive, itself, will run the same as usual.
