I wanted to keep the ball rolling and throw in the 2nd song from the 3 song demo I've been engineering and helping produce.

This one is miles away from Lovers and Runners type rock, but hopefully still enjoyable. Let me know how you feel!

:D

ps

the last song up is a cover of Erasures "A Little Respect". Just in case your an Erasure fan.

The first thing I'm thinking it that the sound rivals some of the best records I'm hearing on the alt stations...but better, in some ways: not as compressed, a little more pleasingly abrasive...actual points on the transients. It made me happy to hear it.

Second thing is your reverb aps...again, like I hear the pros use...

When the chorus hits, I'm thinkin' 'this is MUSICAL, too' The writer/arranger(s) have a natural knack for melody, contrast, texture.....all the good things you want to have to keep ears on it.

One tiny thing.
Listen to the bass sound on some of the newer records. One that comes to mind is Vertical Horizon's record made at Electric Lady. There's a deep growl and strong fundamental in the tone...as well as being a few db's louder in the mix. The guy in that band uses a Thunderbird bass and GK amps..at least when I saw them live. It's a sound to die for, and would be the cherry on top of this beautiful work of art. I don't know how they do it.

Yeah. It gets the "this don't suck a lot" seal of approval.

Some talented MF'rs on this forum. You're one of 'em Those are hot tunes on your SC page. And you're getting good schoolin', or your really gifted..or both. I wouldn't be surprised to hear them on the radio soon. They're that good.

btw one other thing...the chorus is playing loop wise in by head ten minutes later. It has infected me. That's good.

And the qualities...the hip-hoppish, happy melodic, just a hint of darkness...a lot of different elements and influences, put it right in the corrent pocket, and make it appealing to a lot of people in a lot of age brackets. It has a nascent 'Beatles-esque-ness' about it.

Great work.

Jeff....awesome feedback here man. Now this is how I like to talk! That Vertical Horizon style bass factor was a HUGE time consumer on this thing.

You nailed my thoughts exactly. Working on this, I only had my Specter NS/5000 which is a 5 string. Not naturally "growly" by nature, but still decent tones. Good enough bass, but how I tried to EQ more growl in there.

Between you and me, what I wouldn't do for any type of Warwick, that thunderbird or a Fender Jazzmaster. I live for the bass growl and I was a little dissapointed that I didn't get it on this one.

The song is a current favorite of mine as well. I always love getting a chance doing those waterfall kind of vocals. Fun to mix and really cool chill up the spine factor when I hear it.

Very kind words and I'll definitely relay the message. It'll help with morale :D

Thunderbird is my favorite bass. I fell in love with the sound way back in the 70's. There was a band called Wishbone Ash. Had a minor couple hits..then disappeared. But the bassist used a Thunderbird, and that sound stuck with me. Then I heard VH, and was blown away by the bass sound. Went to see them live, and there was the T-bird.

Every other bass Gibson ever made SUCKED!!!! But there's something about the T-bird. Some of the newer basses can get it...so many now. I have a bassist from the Navy Band sitting in with me now and then. He has a custom 5-string that gets it. And when he hits that low B...I get skids in m' shorts.

I think a T-bird is fetching a few thou, now. Vintage? HAHAHAHA

Beautiful work, Lee!
Mix sounds awesome. Songwriting's great, very nice hookline, song's got a lot of dynamic and character. No nits from me, it's great!

Cheers
Joey :):):):)

Wishbone Ash didn't disappear - in fact they're still going around the Festival circuits.
Blowin' Free - great bass & everything else.
Great capture Lee.
The vox tonally remind me of the nasality of TMBGiants.
Bass growls pretty well mate.
The cymbals sound a bit splashy to me (headphones) but that's not a bad thing.
Really well written song.
One last little thing - it seems (again h/phones) to lack a tiny bit top end sparkle.
Lovers & Runners
A big sound picture -nice dynamics - the change section reminds me of Little Purple Circles.
Good song though the chorus is a little derivative (but aren't they all these days?) - lots of GEEtars - nice.
I like the space effects too.

Hey Ray! Good to hear from you again buddy!

Thanks for the input, especially for the bass. I always wonder what you'll think of the bass :D

Its funny you mentioned the high end issue, cause I just noticed that today. I tend to go through these 12 hour long sessions without break, and it's easy to forget that the ears are shot and need rest.

Plus I realized through experimentation that the API mix-buss plug in I was using has nice effect, but loses a bit of clarity when I push it. So I'm working on mixing into a more transparent mix buss.

So I aim to get some brand spankin new mixes up soon!

Oh yeah, baby!!

When this thing ("Lucy") breaks out at 40 seconds...when I'm, as usual , expecting another round a "fill" verse.....I get chills. That chorus...

You deliver a real surprise...momentum, momentum, momentum.....and the hook/chorus...really drills the thing.

Love the new sounds. It's big. Raw, Real, Aggressive.

Everything I said before.....and on steroids.

I can't pick nits...nor would I want or need to. It comes across as shear unity of purpose...sure of itself, and finished.

My neice's boyfriend plays in an original alt band ...about the same cut and sound as you guys have....good writing....not the likkedy drummer..but I heard they got a new guy who smokes. Point: they cut a record in Boston at a top shelf studio, using the reputed best sets of ears available for the genre...and a FAF deal price of something like $2,000 just for the mastering. God knows what the studio cost. Very slick. Which, by comparison to your recordings, is its...and others like it...undoing. There's a deal more life in yours. Not too damn creamy. Your record beats it. Writing, performing, mix and master. By a long shot.

Another standing "O"

I'm going back for another listen...to learn some shit...and just enjoy, while sucking on a Guinness. Thanks for the gift.

If you ever need a replacement guitarist...I can dye my hair and move to FL.

Uh oh...just listened again...post 40 sec.. D'ja raise the level of the L&R relative to the vox?? Or just cut the vox?? It's getting hard to distinguish the words. I'm on phones...and that usually de-emphasizes center for me...I'll try monitors tomorrow. I know this is your 'final answer'. But if someone seconds...maybe you should give it another bit of scrutiny. This is an important piece of work for you, IMHO. I listened to everything on your linked page. I think this might be the tune that sells the CD. And maybe gets you a distribution deal. And air-play.

yikes! Good thing I keep all the different versions of my mixes!

Actually I swapped out the API master buss compressor for a cleaner one. So it kind of loosened the belt on the mix so to speak. It did bring out the Left and Right channel stuff more, but did spend some time remixing the levels. I mean I think the vocals where ok?

I'll spend the the night listening on any player I can get my hands on to see what I get. So far sounds alright on my laptop, crappy computer speakers with a subwoofer, headphones and TV.

I know better than to really finalize something until I've gotten a general thumbs up :D

thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Oh wait, slash that! hahaha!

Man, you have me going back to this mix and listening to in a whole new way. I'm really getting into this! This sounds retarded but, when you mix, you get so sucked into the process that you almost don't have time to sit back and listen like a fan. But as soon as it's done and the engineer hat comes off....good stuff.

Extremely kind words. In my position, i even forget about how others will hear it some time. I just get into this thing like "ok Lee, gotta make it sound like that one album, or this other album" and then I go for it.

Hopefully I can land a steady job at something for once here. What I would give for a decent studio to give me that "look man, we need our it guy, here are the keys...you're our new head engineer".

I'll drink to all that :D

ps.

My pleasure to share a piece of music that someone may appreciate.

Ah you caught that post before I deleted. I took a quick listen on monitors at very low level...and it sounded OK. I think. Got people sleeping in the next room. So I figured you know what your doing...and if it ain't right, you'd catch it without help. Just get some rest!

Hey Lee...I just blasted the tune [Lucy] so my sister could hear it out on the deck. She loves the tune, but she had trouble hearing the vox lyric. And I got a listen with fresh ears outside...the band is overpowering the vox, to me. I was outside...the sound was coming out the door...effectively mono. The vox was second in line to the music.
