I recently switched over from ProTools LE to Logic Pro and have found that on average my output levels when bouncing to disk are alot lower than what I used to get in proTools using T-Racks. This is after I've applied the native Mastering settings to the Main Output channel as well. Has anyone else experienced this?

Are there certain settings I've overlooked. Are the Mastering tools in Logic generally bad and are there better plugz I should check out? I usually have my mixes mastered the old fashioned way, but I still like to get a sense of my mixes at home with mastering software.

Please help!! Thanks!

One contributer to that situation, but one that's often overlooked, is that there are sometimes differences in how the editors are set to treat pan values. For example some settings boost levels a couple of dB near the center notch, other setting cut a few dBs there, and still others use different formulas for calculating intrinisc volumes at different pan settings. These different pan level calibrations can cause otherwise identical-looking mixes to sound different.

It's possible that part of you situation is that your instances PT and Logic were/are using different pan calibrations. In the options/preferences/settings for the software they often provide two or three different options for how the software should deal with pan volumes. Perhaps if you use the same or similar settings in both programs it migh thelp balance out the volume between the two mixes.

Craig Anderton had an excellent article detailing this issue in EQ Magazine a few months back. This article is available on the EQ website at
