Also, I think the second half of the sound clip using the 635a might work in some situations. It is the only omni in the bunch and picking up alot more noise and crappy room sound than any of the others. To tell you the truth, the 635a is one of my favorite sounding mics. You could'nt tell by that clip though.

amra said:That was a pretty interesting comparison Travis, thanks for going through all that trouble for us. I think what it shows you, is that you can get a pretty decent sound out of a lot of different mics. Sure they sounded different, many of them sounded nice enough to make me want to hear more guitar playing on your old yamaha.
Of course, not hearing it in person, I don't know which track sounds most like it really sounds...but I do think even the EV recording would have a place if you were recording that 'indie', retro, beatles influenced type stuff..

I'm a very lo fi type of person with a bad ear (that's why I like lo fi I suppose) the Radio Shack, AT & JM all sound like I like to hear acoustic guitar - bright.
Some of the other s have excellent details & image as well as even tone. I must admit to being distracted by the occasional extra flash strumm on some tracks.
I must do something similar with my hotch potch of mics - just for my own reference.
Again thanks.

have a squiz at the list I'll do the comp with:
Sony Electret ECM 19B (3)(my fav);
Shure 57 (don't like);
Realistic Dual Pattern 33-919 A;
Primo DM-260 mini Dynamic (2);
Le Grange DM 110 Dynamic;
Behringer XM8500 Dynamic (2)
&
Hi-Mike DM201 Crystal
Each has it's own unique flavour. My fav is the 19B set. I'll look forward to hearing the comparison. & I will have to think it through as you say. The 19B's change tonality with slight adjustments of the angle so all will have to be set up as you suggest.
I hope to get to it next weekend though that's probably a tad optimistic.
By the way, you play nicely.

No prob mate, Paul McCartney just did it, might cost you a few million but it is possible
Gday ray...even up here in canada we have the same overwhelming , pulsating cacophony in the summer, I think they are called locusts....I better check that out
John Berry said:Yes but which microphones are your favorites? Octavier?shure? I need to purchase something soon. I have just purchased a Rane MS1 for use with female vocals. I need a good microphone to match. Has anybody got any suggestions? maybe an sm-58?
