I know the 635a sounds terrible in the clip but it really was'nt placed for best sound. It was placed where all the others were placed. Also, I think the second half of the sound clip using the 635a might work in some situations. It is the only omni in the bunch and picking up alot more noise and crappy room sound than any of the others. To tell you the truth, the 635a is one of my favorite sounding mics. You could'nt tell by that clip though.

It was easily the most different-sounding of the bunch.

That's actually a good indication that in certain situations, when nothing else is working, the 635A might be just the ticket.

I don't know that accoustic guitar would be the first thing I'd grab it for to begin with :D, but I would imagine that in the context of a busier mix, what we heard on the clip might sit a lot better and "play nice" with the other tracks ... in comparison to the other clips which may have been a little too full-sounding for that.

The o' yammy is like having a beautiful girl that has one leg and one eye. She's still beautiful, although you know you want something else and would feel terrible if you got rid of her after all she's been thru. :D

Me and this guitar have went thru alot together I can't ever part with it no matter how boomy it's plywood body resonates or how buzzy it's old frets get.

That was a pretty interesting comparison Travis, thanks for going through all that trouble for us. I think what it shows you, is that you can get a pretty decent sound out of a lot of different mics. Sure they sounded different, many of them sounded nice enough to make me want to hear more guitar playing on your old yamaha.

Of course, not hearing it in person, I don't know which track sounds most like it really sounds...but I do think even the EV recording would have a place if you were recording that 'indie', retro, beatles influenced type stuff..

out of all the mics, i'd say that none of them sound like this guitars natural sound. i can't really pick one. i do like the mk012 and hamburg quite a bit though. i agree with you amra. when it comes down to it, with some time spent on positioning and judicious eq, most of these mics could handle the same role within a mix.

the 635a just sounds interesting to me when positioned just right, and makes me want to find a place for it when recording acoustic guitar. i already use it for some vocal stuff.

i'm doing another comparison tonight between onboard sound / 1010LT and behringer mixer pre / dmp2 / dmp3 / vtb1 / mp105. i was going to do it earlier today but i figured i'd wait until things are a little quieter.

i'm glad you guys found this thing interesting, helpful, or just listened to kill some time. i think we could all clear alot of smoke by doing comparisons like this.

Thanks Heaps TIF,
I'm a very lo fi type of person with a bad ear (that's why I like lo fi I suppose) the Radio Shack, AT & JM all sound like I like to hear acoustic guitar - bright.
Some of the other s have excellent details & image as well as even tone. I must admit to being distracted by the occasional extra flash strumm on some tracks.
I must do something similar with my hotch potch of mics - just for my own reference.
Again thanks.

as far as the playing, i did'nt really strive to play the exact same notes each time thru although maybe i should have. but, i'm a guitar player, not a scientist and a sloppy guitar player at that. i'd like to hear it if you do a comparison. maybe you will turn me on to a new mic. beware though. spend 10 or 15 minutes planning everything out. i know it sounds simple but it took me at least 1/2 an hour to figure out how to match the mic levels........just something that i've never had to do.

sorry man, i completely misread your post the first time i read it. i've tried the 635a on a guitar amp, my voice (no one else likes it but me :D ), and acoustic guitar. it's a fun mic to play around with. i'm gonna try it again on acoustic along with one of the condensors to add some detail. it does have kind of a honky sound though and probably would'nt be my first choice for acoustic either. that honky sound seems to work on my voice though. maybe because i'm a honky. :D

TravisinFlorida,
have a squiz at the list I'll do the comp with:
Sony Electret ECM 19B (3)(my fav);
Shure 57 (don't like);
Realistic Dual Pattern 33-919 A;
Primo DM-260 mini Dynamic (2);
Le Grange DM 110 Dynamic;
Behringer XM8500 Dynamic (2)
&
Hi-Mike DM201 Crystal
Each has it's own unique flavour. My fav is the 19B set. I'll look forward to hearing the comparison. & I will have to think it through as you say. The 19B's change tonality with slight adjustments of the angle so all will have to be set up as you suggest.
I hope to get to it next weekend though that's probably a tad optimistic.
By the way, you play nicely.

thanks for the compliment and i'm looking forward to hearing yours. there's a couple of mics i have'nt heard. pm me when you do yours so i don't miss it. i still have this $2 pc mic that i used to use on my guitar amp. i need to check it out again.

i'm a little behind on mine. it will be sunday before i can do the next one. but hey, i drank some beers and recorded some crickets: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=570057

cardioid potent, i have'nt forgotten about your pics. they're coming.

Those crickets sound almost as overwhelming as cicadas in summer down here.

No prob mate, Paul McCartney just did it, might cost you a few million but it is possible :eek:

Gday ray...even up here in canada we have the same overwhelming , pulsating cacophony in the summer, I think they are called locusts....I better check that out

Yes but which microphones are your favorites? Octavier?shure? I need to purchase something soon. I have just purchased a Rane MS1 for use with female vocals. I need a good microphone to match. Has anybody got any suggestions? maybe an sm-58?

Get a Ribbon, you'll NEVER be the same! :D

L Mandrake,
