Anyway, I just miced up a snare and I was playing along and guess whut! Playin drumz is hard!! This is going to exponentially add on time to production.

Tell me about it! You should have heard a few of my home efforts as a drummer. The abbreviated version is: crappy drummer+lousy room+old drums=break out the drum samples!

Lt. Bob and Guernica---I just knew we couldn't keep you two beauties part for long!:D

Hello Computer,

Hearing some Tool, and NIN in there. Really cool how the slightly funkified beat comes in on the off-beat. Building up to something very large...

Vocals are the Type-O thing... music is very cool. Something about the vocal track just hain't sittin' right... probably some early reflections or something in your room... sounds like the ambience was added to this afterward... kind of like a slapback echo, then reverb later... makes them sound like they aren't being performed in the same room as the music

(sorry 'bout the nitpick)....

Vey coo soloing there. Great moods. Nicely done on the creativity tip.

Hey Chad! where ya been? We've missed you around here!

OK, back to regularly scheduled thread....

This song is a trip!

That recurring riff: was that looped? It has a click/HF pop in it like you've got some DC offset happening or something.

I actually like the sampled drums in the first half of the tune. Kinda helps to set the mood, and a cool mood it is. Once the guitar solos kick in though they sound too wimpy.

The vocal effects were a bit much I think. If you didn't have the words up there I would have no idea what they were.

Cool panning stuff in there.

I liked the way the mix came forward out of shadows, but I think it should happen slower so it sneaks up on the listener better.

A little fun with the string against the pole piece at the end there? Sounds cool.

I guess I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. I dig the song as a whole. I like the drum beat you chose, except for it's repetitiveness. I also don't care much for the Eq of it. Needs some balls to really drive this tune. The changes that come up around the 4 minute mark were cool. AWESOME solo dude. Love the two guitar lead, that was cool. Great tone on that lead guit. The rest of the guitars lack something tonewise. All in all, A good song. In a Khompewtur sort of way.

I'd really like to say something aboot this... :p So please forgive me while I have my rant.

The stars DO exist..... so lets either choose not to use them or to use them honorably.
Dude.... we have chosen not to use them... that's my point.

Look... everyone can see the stars... of course... we're not blind.... but anyone who's been here more than five freaking minutes (and who pays attention) doesn't put the slightest bit of weight in them.

The ratings system is completely worthless, because you never know why the thread was starred..... We've got one-star bandits that star every thread on the front page... we've got people who 5 star their own threads to get attention... we've got people who have multiple usernames that they use to get their rating up... we've got regulars in the clinic who can post three minutes of tripe and still get five stars just because everyone likes them... we've got people who give low ratings to people they don't like and higher ratings to people they do... and we've got our share of trolls... just like any other forum (so, admitting that you're sensitive to 1-staring is pretty foolish, since that just makes you a target for them to try to piss you off every single time you post something)... I mean... seriously... out of all the threads you read, maybe 10% have actually been starred "legitimately". So, if you pay the slightest bit of attention to stars as a means to judge the thread, or if you pay the slightest bit of attention to them as a way to feel "good" about how your song was received, then you're being completely illogical. There are way too many unreliable factors involved in the ratings system to make it the slightest bit valid. Get used to it.... that's the way it is... it's the internet... people are like that... you can't control it... such is life. :p

If you want a reasonable way to judge a thread/song... read through all the comments.

Chris - It's 11:30p.m on Saturday night, you and me are the only names I'm seeing in the clinic list. I post a thread. Do you respond to it? No, you bump your own with a one line bullshit comment that isn't even responding to a review. I bump my own thread again. Do you bother to read it? I dunno, but less than 60 seconds later your own thread is bumped with another one line addition that is again not responding to a review. Do you not see me man? am i invisible to you? None of your other buddies are around, it's just me and you in the clinic.
Khomp... geez man... seriously... you're making mountains out of molehills here. And just like with the ratings system, you're doing it with unreliable data...

Let me clue you in on a little secret. There's an option in your user profile called "Invisible Mode"... and most people who've been around here for a while use it. You will never see my name in the clinic... and yet I spend a heck of a lot of time there... that's because I have my username cloaked, so it doesn't show up in the list of users. So I can almost guarantee you that it wasn't just you and chris in the clinic. There coulda been fifteen more people lookin' around in there and you wouldn't have known it. Just keep that in mind the next time you assume who's doin' what.

And speaking of assumption... what's up with all this "I require you to respond to my thread or else I'll get offended" crap??? This is the blinking internet, for God's sake. No one owes you anything. It never ceases to amaze me when people get into some kind of "entitlement" attitude, and start bean-counting who replied to their last thread(s) so they can decide who to "like" or not. Grow up folks. There are a million different reasons why someone may not have replied to a thread, and you will never get anywhere by assuming that it's cause they "don't like you". I've had plenty of instances where I've mentally marked a song for comment, but just got so busy that day that it slipped my mind. (or for some other reason, I didn't get a chance to reply.) We do have lives after all.

And sometimes, you just don't have anything to say. I mean really... is it a requirement that we always think of something poignant to say aboot every single song we listen to??? Is that a new rule in the clinic? What if it's a genre that I just don't know anything aboat? I mean... I don't know jack crap aboot Electronica... I wouldn't know "good" Electronica from "bad" Electronica... so I usually don't respond to songs like that... I just don't have anything worthwhile to say...

And even if the 1-starring or not commenting is malicious, or because they "didn't like you"... well sheesh... so what... once again.. it's just the internet. I could be a 13 year-old Lithuanian prostitute for all you guys know. :p If you're gonna let whether or not I, or anyone else here, pays you "enough respect" bother you, then you need to get a little better grasp on priorities.

WATYF
EXCELLENT post.

I almost never listen to tunes when I have one in the clinic. I'm mixing. Unlike some people, I don't post tunes I'm not CURRENTLY working on. Sorry if it pisses anybody off, but I try to spend a good amount of time here when I DON'T have a song in the clinic to make up for it.

Fuck anybody who doesn't like it, lol. Oh, and I PROMISE you, you didn't see my name in any "clinic list."

-Stealth Guy.

Cool vocal effects. Good singing too. Nice guitars. Good sound to all of them. I liked the "dueling leads". I love that attack on the bass.

Lyrically I thought it was so-so. The song takes a little too long to develop IMO. Little pop at 1:30.

Cool end. There's some crackling during it though (6:03-6:05).

Good job.

P.S., Hey Participant is back!! Where'ya been?

Chris - The whole star thing all started when you called the person(s) who one starred his thread "asshole". If you don't care about the stars Chris why comment on it? why care? why associate negative energy with the rating? I don't give a fuck about hypocrites. Don't get me wrong I'm not calling anyone specifically a hypocrite, im just saying in general that if i thought someone was a hypocrite (hypothetically) then i would think "fuck that person".

Newsflash for you and WAYTF, I KNOW about stealth mode and I DID see your name in the clinic.

WAYTF

Dude.... we have chosen not to use them... that's my point.

Look... everyone can see the stars... of course... we're not blind.... but anyone who's been here more than five freaking minutes (and who pays attention) doesn't put the slightest bit of weight in them.

Apparently you don't have the universal concensus you think you do. Did you even read Guernica's post? Maybe there is a self-viewing enlightened mature set in here who have decided they won't use them but that doesn't cover bbs members of all shapes and sizes. Where do you get off using this "WE" shit. I am a part of that "WE" and i DO RATE THREADS and obviously I am not the only one.

At what point WAYTF did you become aware that you were thinking in "WE" terms of the clinic rather than "I" because I will address that later. There IS a recognized sense of community in here.

We've got one-star bandits that star every thread on the front page... we've got people who 5 star their own threads to get attention... we've got people who have multiple usernames that they use to get their rating up... we've got regulars in the clinic who can post three minutes of tripe and still get five stars just because everyone likes them... we've got people who give low ratings to people they don't like and higher ratings to people they do

I cannot figure out what you're saying here. You're argument is that no one uses them and yet here are examples of 4 different types of posters (including dedicated serious regulars) using them for various reasons.

So, if you pay the slightest bit of attention to stars as a means to judge the thread, or if you pay the slightest bit of attention to them as a way to feel "good" about how your song was received, then you're being completely illogical.

Yes I already said I agree with this earlier in the thread, this feel likes some pre-packaged "newbie-rant". I feel that stars reflect more about bbs personality dynamics than they do about music production.

IF THEY ARE SO USELESS I CALL ON YOU THE "WE" OF THIS FORUM TO START A CAMPAIGN TO DEACTIVATE THREAD RATING ON THIS PARTICULAR FORUM!!!

And finally

Ya really painted me with a nice immaturity brush there WAYTF. I kinda resent it. I don't require anything. It's not about bean-counting either. Every other regular i've seen on this forum has taken the courtesy to check in and say hello at least once which was very nice while Chris never acknowledged me publicly. We had a confrontation that precipitated from that and well basically he admitted that he had listened to my stuff and that he thought all of it sucked.

Don't boil it down to just the internet WAYTF, because this place isn't about the net. It's about music and music is my LIFE i eat and breathe it 24/7 and work at it just as hard as anyone on this board. If chris thinks that everything I've devoted myself to is not even worth a "Keep workin hard!" review, then there SHOULD be bad blood between us and you should stay the fuck out of it.

....Ive become the lone star advocate......:D :D

....this is becoming a subject with posts that are boardering on becoming personal.... ...so im not gonna give you the show youre looking for watyf... Ive already pissed off one friend in here with this..... and i have no interest in a 5 page thread arguing this dead end subject with you.

Dude.... we have chosen not to use them... that's my point.

Look... everyone can see the stars... of course... we're not blind.... but anyone who's been here more than five freaking minutes (and who pays attention) doesn't put the slightest bit of weight in them.

....dont generalize..... who are YOU? ....we? I dont care what YOU decide to do....

....and ive been here for more than 5 minutes. .....although, with regards to confronting your rude-ass soapbox rebuttle, my attention span is questionable.

......man, this is a subject that has probably been beaten to death in here long ago.... ...but to me, ......you're goddamn right they mean something. I understand why folks discount them. They are abused as a means of taking personal "shots" that have absolutely nothing to do with the poster's work. And, as long as this happens, some folks are going to ignore them...... and, ...rightfully so. It's a shame too.
I've never had a use for anything less than 5 stars. To me, Its either an excellent representation of a persons work as compared to that persons previous work (5 stars), or its not quite what I (very humbly) feel that person is capable of. What we need is for folks to treat them honorably, whatever their criteria. With my dial-up situation, I am much more likely to listen to a tune w/ a bunch of stars beside it than i am to a song with 100 replies and no stars. I see them as a pat on the back for a job well done.... ....and something to be proud of. That's why i always let folks know when i dump a 5 on them...... ...."I AM IMPRESSED with what youve done".
.....this is how "I" feel about it. Im gonna continue to use them for these reasons.... If you decide not to... ...it doesnt effect me at all ....so i really dont care. But if I leave my 5 (as gay as that sounds:D ) on one of your tunes.... know that I mean it as the the most sincere form of respect that i can offer in this internet situation. Should you care?...you decide, its just my very humble opinion.

Guernica

....and if that aint enough...

blow me :D

Khomp, I dont know you from adam man.... ..so I wanna make sure its understood that my words dont carry your baggage. I dont have a "beef" with anyone in here.... ....especially not over something as trivial as stars. This place is fundementally built on opionions (what others think/feel)... To me the stars are just another tangible extension of this.

use them or not

..strangely enough this is my thread..

I always thought these kind of zany brouhaha's would never happen to me. I don't know how it spiralled into this WWF free-for-all but I want to thank the people that filtered out the craziness and listened to the song.

participant - hey thanks man, i really like those bands. I definitely thought the Type-O thing as well. I think what you're hearing in the vox is that it's double tracked. The low part and then it's recording again in a whisper and the whisper has delay on it while the low part doesn't. I dunno i liked the sound but i didn't think about the spatial impact, I'll look closer at it.

M.Brane - Thanks for listening man, yeah i was already freakin because the build-up was like 2 minutes long I thought that was pushing it, im glad it didn't seem too long to you.

The guits i recorded about 1 minute worth of each riff. Then i went back and picked out the best of the riffs and edited out any that i didn't think were up to par. There was some groove happening in there that i didn't originally intend and i kept some of those. I tried to catch any pops I could but the first rhythm track is very "clicky" so it was tough to separate intentional from accidental.

TripleM - I'll check for that pop see if i can get it. Some others have said they've noticed as well. Sorry you didn't like the lyrics. You know i started to discover that on fadeouts all my instruments were crackling when i used compression so I took most of it off the instruments in this song. Ahh.. i bet it's not cutting off noise from the solo tracks...

Guer - No I was referring solely to your views on the rating system, not the rest of it. Our posts in that respect were rather similar i thought.

....one last thing:D :D :D

....there is a very simple solution to this. "If" you decide to use stars... make yours accountable. If you one star someone, dont be a pussy..... tell em you did and why. I think folks will find that kind of criticism is respectable.. If you leave a 5....mention that too. ....a pat on the back by your peers is appreciated, and it sheds a little light on where "you" are coming from.

If the folks that do decide to use the stars do this, its easy to filter out the assholes that misuse them.

....Ive been reading through one of the other rooms and someone mentioned how using cracked software isnt respected here. I thought that was a strong statement..... but an honorable representation for Homerec.com.
I like that. All im asking is that folks show one of the sites "built in" features that same kinda respect.

ok.... Im done

Khomp,
Listening as I type, cool tune.
The distorted chords that come in fit well. Nice ballsy grit.
Panning and balance work well.
This is a headphones tune fer sure!

Kinda stopped abruptly, or sounded chopped off.

I like these kinda tunes, sounds like a lot of fun to make.

And FWIW, I make it a point to listen to 1 star threads, I may not always comment (sometimes 1 star is too many) if I don't have something constructive to say.
Sometimes the 1 star bandit is jealous, and a great tune could be missed.

jcmm

jcmm - Thanks very much for the listen. Yeah your review has been keeping with the theme of this, someone didn't like impact chords some liked the ending.
I was afraid it wouldn't translate well to phones, so that is good to hear. Whomever called the ending kind of patched together was probably the most right, I couldn't figure out what to do with it.

Yeah don't worry about the stars thing, i don't really heed them. I probably have the most 1 star rated tunes in this clinic this year and still goin strong. The whole star thing was just some spill-over from a cyber-brawl that happened a couple days ago.

well...I read a page and a half, and couldn't see any good places to jump in and stir the pot some more!!!

I like this kind of music, repetative as it may be. I like the sound effects, the drums work for me...could be a little louder, and the vocals not quite as loud. Nothing too much to add it appears. Late again:(

very cool texture you have in that guitar thing. i like it. didn't like the singing, but that's just taste. well done.
