looking for recording overhead condenser pair

Im looking for a good pair of matched overhead condensers that willl work good for recording. Im hoping to spend no more than 200. Right now I use one at 3035 (my vocal mic) as an overhead. Please if you have any insight let me know
 
The Octavas are the only thing in that price range.

I read some good things about the HM-1 on a different site (cant remember)
Also a few users in the mic form ordered them. Do a search im the mic form for Kelaudio.
 
I got my rode nt5s on ebay, new for under $200. I like em a lot.

I dont the ECM 8000 would be a good choice as O/H due to they do not like high SPL's
I have used them for mellow drums with good results, but when I used them for rock I had bad results.
 
Alright there are a few Im browsing. Im hoping for some tips on the good or bad of these for recording overhead use. AKG C1000s. MXL 993s. behringer B-5s. AKG c430's.

Jake- Owa I hear the rodes are really good for overheads. Have you had any experience with the nt4? Its got like the 2 mics in one thing going on. a bit pricey but just wondering
 
AKG C-1000s sound like ass as an overhead although they sound pretty damn good on toms and snare. No hands on with the rest of the mics you list but out of those, I've heard good things about the C-430s.

I use the C1000S for overheads and while they may have a very slightly hyped high end, they most definitely don't sound like ass. They are pretty accurate, all in all. Some folks may even prefer the sound.
 
I took a chance and got 2 MCA SP1s for $50 each and am VERY pleased with their performance in the drum overhead application. An OK vocal mic as well.
 
You've had some good responses- You're scoping out mostly the wrong mics. Oktava MC012, MXL603s, C430- all acceptable.-Richie
 
for $300 you can get a matched pair of Studio Projects C4's. They come with both omni and cardoid capsules and shockmounts. I have them and I primarily use them as drum overheads. I think they are great!
I have read a lot of great things about those Oktavas MC 012's, but you would have to get a matched pair from someone reliable. The quality control is real iffy, and i have read here that they can sound quite differant fromn eachother. But, when you have a good pair, they are supposed to be superb. The general feeling I get from the BBS is that akg c1000's are very shitty mics.

No, they're not shitty mics. When used where they DO sound good they're fantastic mics.
 
I second the C-4's as a very useable set of inexpensive mics. C1000S is not high on my list of mics to die for., but they are alledged to be good on snare and toms. I would not choose them for overheads. You know what, though ? I would consider a pair of C2000B's (*NOT* 3000B). They work well as overheads, and on toms, acoustic, and some vocals. They actually are a lot like the MC012's, but better for vocals due to the larger housings. And- Austrian quality control beats the hell out of the Russians. They might even fix it if it breaks.-Richie

i use the 8000s right up on the toms with a 10db inline pad. no farting or fizzing, and i play very loud rock...

if drummerfreak likes the sound of the 3035 on overheads perhaps he should get a second one. Ikinda like the sound of ldc overhead , i've used the sp b1 with some success.
