I'm NOT a complete noob and I JUST got my first interface with built in pres. It's not a stretch to think he may or may not have a preless interface. You offer no explanation as to why you think he has built in pres. Please explain.

For the record though, pres are like everything else. You need them, and eventually, whether you like it or not, you'll shell out the cash for them.

From the looks of things, you're not making very many friends around here. I'd run my attitude through a different preamp, perhaps one that colors it a little more on the friendly side.

yeah, i also made it a point to have him list his equipment/signal chain
people assuming he DOESN:T have a preamp serves just as much of a disservice if that is what you are implying, so what is your point, I am fairly positive he is computer based, therefore he has some sort of interface, what are the chances that that interface does not have built in pres, the vast majority of them do, only very cheap simple devices don't for the most part, i figured someone willing to shell out a grand on a mic would probably have spent at least a couple hundred on the device that is RECORDING his music, pretty important piece afterall, and if he is using something like an MV, then those also have built in pres, And he's doing HIP-HOP vocals, not trying to bring that down, that's my genre as well, i'm saying that is gonna affect what kind of equipment he probably has as well as what he is going to need/want.
I aint here to make friends, i'm in this thread to try and help someone, which leads me to wonder what the hell you two are posting in here at all for, the only thing you offered to the thread was to try and make some sort of point on me, hmmm, and yeah, i have a better attitude with people who don't come into threads trying to be dicks to someone is doing nothing more than trying to help someone else,

yo, doulos24, what's a slew rate?? if that was a misspell my bad, if not, i really don't konw, and I disagree entirely with the no good hiphop comment, i can't even say that about country music, and fuck, i hate that shit

Well, there probably hasn't been any good country music (or jazz) since about 1970, reggae & rock music since 1980, and hip-hop since 1990 :p But before that, all of them were great! :D

Slew rate is a measurement of how fast an amplifier can change voltage. If you have a source with a lot of fast transients that you want to amplify a large amount, you need a fast amplifier IF you want accurate response.

PhilGood's comment refers to the very slow transient response of a large diaphragm dynamic mic. So long as the amplifier exceeds the slew rate of the amplified signal a comfortable margin, it should be good enough. Since these are among the "slowest" mics around, you don't necessarily need the "fastest" amplifier to plug them into.

no I ment you need one with a fast slew rate and good transient response the sm7 is a good mic for rejecting noise in a home studio but a "fast preamp" or one with quick transient response will sound more musical over fast rap sections then preamps that are slower in respone ie a toob preamp it might come off on the track as a crispness to the vocal easier to make out everything in th mix it will be clearer and more transparent and less eq work imho

i agree you don't need the fastest, but fast amplifiers are usually made with better parts as well and I don't think it could hurt. I do think even with the slower mic it wll make a diffrence in sound quality overall

I would think that with an LDD the quality of the pre's benefit would really be in the reduction or absence of non-linear distortion more than how fast the slew rate is. I could be wrong though. Its been known to happen.
