Looking for a preamp...

I think the Studio Projects VTB-1 is exactly what I'm looking for. I am really leaning towards this purchase, especially after reading all the positive reviews. And look at that price tag!!! :)

Another reason why I haven't bought a condensor yet.

I would hate to drop $4-500 on a nice mic unless I could afford a nice pre- to go with it. I'd be budgeting around $1K for the package if I ever get around to buying it.

Yeah, yeah...

(for those keeping score at home, that would be Sennheiser Excuse #23 :D )

I'm with the advice on the studio projects VTB-1. I have several "budget" mic pres and that one stands out of the group.

You will be happily surprised with its quality especially with that mic.

Studio Projects VTB-1. $179 from most places.
In your budget, and with that mic, this is a no-brainer.

... or the ubiquitous ART MP. Better yet, the Dual MP that you can get on Ebay now for $150 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=912051393

You're not going to get anything spectacular for $200. I can't speak for the VTB-1, but the dual MP was the first preamp I bought, and I still have it and use it all the time.

LMAO. Yer a real comedian you are.:D

Pipeline- which of those circuit schematics do you recommend? I'm interested in making my own pre and this looks like a great way to get started. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

It seems to me you need to figure out what you need from a mic pre. A Mackie 1202 is not a bad thing to even if you're only using the pres. They are all I have in the way of pres so I'm not talking from any personal experience. They are clean and transparent. If that's what you need, it's a low cost option. I'm happy with what they do for me as I don't yet know what I want from "colored" sound.

I was at a working fulltime pro studio last week at a friend's session. The engineer/owner was pretty happy with his ART Pro MPA. I'd like to hear some feedback on this myself.

The RNMP sounds like a good option too. Is it out yet?
