Looking for a preamp...

triple cubic

New member
I have just ordered a brand-spankin'-new Audio-Technica AT4040 condenser mic, and I am looking for a preamp with phantom power that will do it justice, but also NOT break the bank...

Something under $200 preferrably. Is there anything for that price that will make my condenser sound good and provide phantom power?

Thanks, y'all.

you know, the 4040 isnt a bad mic at all...a 200 dollar preamp ( unless you make it yourself and spend 200 $ in parts ) is not gonna do it justice

can you solder ? :)

here is an often overlooked but REALLY nice bunch of CHEAP preamps...pardon the sorry website, its run by an old guy that only knows how to do ONE thing...make QUALITY electronics
check out the tb-6

its gone up in price but still a killer deal...youre also gonna hear about RNC's new preamp I bet...another cheapy thats will most likely be good

if you can solder, check out

I'm not really too keen on making my own stuff. I'd rather just go with something tried and true, but at the same time, not break the bank and do my mic justice.

Can someone just recommend some "off the rack" preamps that would work well with the Audio-Technica 4040 please? I am desperate for something under $200...

Help! :)

These don't seem like reputable brands to me... I am sure they are good, but I would like something that I can stand by more confidently (i.e. warranties and repairs).

Mackie, behringer, etc... So let me ask this again...

Anyone know of any good preamps below $200 that will work well with an Audio-Technica 4040?

LOL...man go do some research

Dan Alexander built this copy after the Neve patent ran out...Between him and Brent Averill there is no more reputable person on second hand neve's!!! besides The great Rupert himself of course...

And to call FMR, maker of the really nice mic preamp unreputable is about as silly as you can get!

Mackie's are built like tanks, but arent by any means a " reputable " mic preamp!

and behringer...COME ON!!!!

screw it...go buy an ART MPA or something, 200 bucks will cover it LOL

Pipe,

I understand where you are coming from, but I am on a budget, and I cannot spend over $200. But, I still want to get the best that I can for that price with my Audio-Technica AT4040. Know what I'm saying?

Let me say that I need just a "decent" preamp, not top of the line. Something adequate.

Ok well go get the Event pre that Henri suggested...there is nothing really wrong with that pre
theres a ton of cheapies right here :

also here

BUT I hate to see that 4040 go to waste...I am gonna go digging around thru some parts bins here and see if I cant MAKE you a better pre...

Audiotechnica is to be commended for casting off their old piece of crap reputation with some of their new mics...I get flamed for liking them all the time...I think you owe it to em to use something nice with it.....

just so I know its not all in vain, can you tell me what the signal chain will be AFTER the mic pre ?

Man if you don't want to spend at least $400-500 don't plan on getting any thing better than a mackie...wait you are going to buy a mixer for the pre's, and you decided on mackie?

I thought you were looking for justice.

Hey Aaron, I'll sell this guy my event and you can make me that preamp...PLEASE.

A couple years back I was gonna make a product called " Discrete-its" a class A discrete amp stage to replace IC's on consoles like mackies and soundcrafts and such

of course I was never able to get it small enough, or COOL enough...they would turn a console into a Kiln

but I did come up with some decent mic pre's out of them....EASY to build...damn I need a scanner! If you got some regular old radio shack experimenter power supplies you could fire em right up! Lemme see what transistors I can match to these that would be easy to find in hawaii

Another reason why I haven't bought a condensor yet.

I would hate to drop $4-500 on a nice mic unless I could afford a nice pre- to go with it. I'd be budgeting around $1K for the package if I ever get around to buying it.
