Looking for 703 / knauf / rockwool in MI

I am trying to build some absorber panels and I am having a hell of time locating this stuff. Can anyone help me?

I live in Detroit and I have searched high and low. Lowes and Home Depot have been no help (go figure). Please even if you don't live in the area, your suggestions may help.

Check out thermafiber.com--there's contact information on there and you should be able to call and get a local supplier for mineral wool blankets.

Owens-Corning 703 boards are about 2-3 times as expensive as the rockwool, but a little easier to work with. I was able to special order some through Home Depot--this an option if you need a lot.

I had luck finding a supplier in my area by contacting them. I didn't have similar success with Owens-Corning and so ended up ordering the stuff through Home Depot.

How much did you order and what did it run? If you don't mind. I need about a dozen or so 24"x48" sheets.

I am editing this now. I have found a supplier of the Knauf products. 1.5" boards (24"x48") are in stock. They have two types 3# and 6#, $12.42 and $18.55 respectively. I have no clue if that is a good price. Can anyone enlighten me?

I am on the east side (st. clair shores). I am making panels to attach to my ceiling (7ft). I don't want to go too thick. I need about 12 of them.

Hey buck, even though my location says Birmingham, I live in lansing. I'm getting the stuff from a drywall supplier. Check out the absorption coefficients on the link I provided. I think the rockwool is a lot cheaper than the fiberglass board. The company that makes the stuff is in Sarnia Ontario, so that isn't to far away. I'm sure they have some local suppliers in the Detroit area.

This link you provided wasn't a thread about Rockwool. I tried searching, but didn't find anything. Shit I wish I lived in Lansing. I'd move right into the second floor of Elderly's..hehe.

I have done some checking in the mean time. I can get 96sqft of 2 inch Aurlex pyramid foam for $249. It's a little more, $30, but it might look a hell of alot better on the ceiling. And I wouldn't have to make anything. I am seriously considering this.

John, if you are following this thread. Would a 2x4 sheet of the Auralex mentioned above be as effective as the Rockwool/Knauf/703? Let me know.

Pricing I got from Home Depot was as follows (all for 2' x 4' shts):

3-in -- $17.68 (per sheet in a pack of 7 sheets total)
2-in -- $11.78 (per sheet in a pack of 5 sheets total)
1-in -- $5.89 (per sheet in a pack of 10 sheets total)

They required a minimum order of 25 packs, but I went with it 'cause it was close to what I needed and they'd deliver it to my driveway in one shot (as opposed to 15 trips up and down the freeway in my mini-p/u).

For comparison, I picked up mineral wool batts for the following:

2-in, 24" x 48" - $1.45 (per batt in a pack of 12 batts total)
3-in, 16" x 48" - $2.60 (per batt in a pack of 10 batts total)

Looks like your Knauff prices are in-line based on the small quantity you need. BTW - what kind of absorbers are you building?

Thanks for the reply. My main concern right now is my ceiling. It's 7ft tall. The current opinion is that this is the primary cause of the extreme reverb in the room I have. This all started in a previous thread called "New room...too much reverb"

I was planning on making light wieght absorbers to mount on the ceiling. But the more I look into this, the Auralex foam I mentioned seems like the way to go. Or maybe not, lol.

I haven't read your other post, but I'd stick to the 703, as its safest (you don't want crap to rain in the air when you play something low / loud, and it will be by far the easiest to install.

If you look in your local yellow pages, try and find "acoustical contractors". There you'll find the people who install sound proofing gear in offices etc., and
they are your best chance of getting 703 at a reasonable rate.
While they might normally not retail the products, if you ask them they will normally let you buy it from them direct.

From your statement regarding extreme reverb I gather your room is rectangular, so you might have to clad both your ceiling and one wall. This is likely to eliminate your problem to a large extend. After that, take some measurements (or use your ears), and you might want to trap some bass in a corner or two.
