J to the R O C
A freind of a friend wants to record a band live during their soundcheck for a short film she made. She has virtually no gear but they're playing a nice club on Monday. Would I be right in saying the best way to record would be to take a master L/R output form the PA mixer into a minidisc or recordable mp3?

If there was no other way to get the recording then yes. I wouldnt use a mini disk or mp3 because of the compression attached to both mediums. I have made several recording this way but by using DAT or straight onto a laptop through an interface. I have done recordings onto mini disk as well that have turned out pretty good.

YOu will end up with a recording that has too much vocal, weak drums, and not much guitar. The mix at a club is the combination of what is coming out of the PA and what is coming off the stage. If the guitars are raging off the stage, they won't be in the PA.

Ah handy to know...I actually don't know if there are vocals or not. Hmm. I still think this may be the only functional way for her....shes a movie-maker, not a sound mixer!

Set up two mics in the room and take a mix out of the console... record it onto 4 tracks [which damn near any laptop can do these days]. Balance them/sync them to picture and it should work... hopefully she's not trying to do more than a few seconds of band to picture because if its not the same performance its going to be a bitch to get sync [unless there are a lot of different angles in use in the photography in which case she can cheat a good bit].

I was going to say set up two LDC's on both sides of the sound board(which should be inline with the center of stage). I would get them up like 7 feet if it is a 4' stage. It depends on the speakers too I guess.

As far as a recorder....? I would suddgest going to guitar center and buy a recorder and some mics and then take them back the next day.

If you do that you might as well pirate the software to edit it with.

Won't work; microphones are non-returnable.

If she doesn't own the proper gear, she should rent it. If she's into movie making, she's probably already got rental sources lined up as that is common practice in the video and film rackets.

Side-noting - If you have time, make an aux mix and record that instead. At least then you can control the individual levels going to the recording as opposed to what's going to the FOH system.

I stand corrected.

Enough with all the attacks.

Buying something and taking it back is not stealing. A consumer has the right to test drive something. Like a car. What is the difference.

Whoah, I did not attack there :). I was just advising that it wouldn't work and suggesting a viable alternative. No more, no less.

But as long as you ask, the difference is in intent. It's not called test driving when there is no intent to purchase whether it passes test or not. It's called abusing a privelige. It's also called feeling entitled to something for nothing. And something for nothing is called stealing.

The attack part wasn't really addressed to you.

I get your point Mr., but it ain't really stealing.

I have never done this buying and taking it back thing. It was just a suddgestion and turn into an ethical battle.

I live in the sticks and don't have the opportunity to rent mics. I just have to buy them or take people's advice like you and others here (which by the way isn't a bad thing).

I lose this battle.

Buying it with the intent to use it and then bring it is wrong.
If that is what you want to do, find some to rent the equipment from.

Next time sign the neg rep that you give out.
