Live VSTs: guitar to a/interface to laptop to amp- noisy & no good

Hi. I am trying to get my E-Mu 0202 to be noise free, or to get advice on buying an audio interface which will work noise-free. It's when playing guitar going to audio interface, which has a firewire plug outlet to link connection to computer, though arrives at USB port on laptop; and the audio interface out goes to amp. It is to be able to use Reaper while running plug-ins - for in a live situation. At the moment I can get low latency, but the background hiss and noise is terrible. Also, the signal seems toi cut in and out and on and off like when your guitar cord plug wires are loose. My E-mu 0202 is also quite old. About eight years old. Do more modern a/interfaces come noise free? Would an upgrade save my a_se?
 
Was it always noisy or just recently started to be a problem?

Most modern USB audio interfaces come with clean line-ins. Are we assuming in your situation the interface is the source of the noise?
