I once saw a radio-engineer recording a choir of +/- 20 people and a small orchestra (+/- 10 people) using the following equipment:

- an analog mixer
- two large diaphragm condenser microphones (put on one stand at a distance of about 20 centimeters, at a height of approx. 2.5 - 3 meters from the ground)
- a tascam cd-rw 2000 to record on

What do you think of this setup? Is it a way to achieve a good live recording?
What setup (mic, recorder, ...) would you choose for a live recording of a small orchestra + small choir?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

This set-up is really good if the room cooperates.

I use a separate preamp instead of the pres on a mixer since I'm only using two mics.

personally I think thats a better way to do it. too many mics on a choir/orchestra can throw off the balance they make themselves, and they don't always get mixed down right so certain sections of the choir/orchestra can stick out, or be over emphasized. when doing large groups like that I think 2-3 mics is the best amount IMHO.

Two decent omni condensors, a very clean stereo mic pre (or two mono) and a DAT in a good room would do nicely.
