line in and line out

This hasn't been a problem before but it is now - I think - being no electronics wizard and therefore at times easily baffled - there is probably something wrong with my setup. Thing is, my line-in plays thru the same speakers as my line-out. This means when I want to record my guitar (eg) over the drums, sometimes I have to turn the gain up on the guitar so much to get the right level I can't hear the drums. IOW I can't turn one up without the other, and if I turn the guitar down I lose the gain and get a poorer signal. I do have another set of speakers - can I set it up so that line-in plays thru one and line out thru the other? I can't figure it out...

Setup is this: gtr into POD, into mixer (eurorack 1602A), into line in (from 'main mix' socket). Line out from computer goes to mixer, which goes to monitors (from 'control room' socket). Does this sound right? In addition, the separate digital line-out goes into Creative surround speakers, but usually I just have one set of speakers turned on...

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks - Malg.

No, going to your mixer again is creating a loop.

The line out from your computer soundcard goes directly to the speakers (or the amplifier for your speakers.)

Thanks Tim - I sometimes have it like that too - but all the sound still comes out of the same speakers - there has to be a way to get the recorded drums loud enough to hear when I am recording the guitar directly via the line in - doesn't there? I've tried using Big Time (CWPA) but it seems a bit daft playing along and not being able to hear the drums while I am recording!

In Cakewalk, adjust the volume of the drum track channel. That should enable you to hear things properly. :)
