Like I Knew You Would

Great tune! Nice vocals too. All the sounds are quite good in this. I was a little caught off guard by the synth lead, but it blended well and gave it a "Cars" vibe which I really liked. While I'm labeling, I'd say this tune also has a Tom Petty sound which is good. Good mix, nothing really poked my ear until the end and it seemed the hats were a little 'close'.

What makes this song interesting K-dub, is the contrast in the mood with the subject matter. That's what makes it sound a bit geeky, flippant, and clueless (which is interesting and good). I'm a guitar hero (in my mind) and still don't think a guitar lead would improve the song.

The song is working, so play to its strengths. Put that synth lead in at the intro (make it the theme) and revel in the flippancy.

Then do a video with a guy in a romantic setting and looking like he really believes he is god's gift, with a shirt pocket with a pen set... and perhaps a very stylish mo.

mixmkr :who listens to lyrics...says this gtr player
this :D

I thought the mix was really good on this kev, I kinda liked the synth and thought it fit the overall vibe of the song....I totally got the ironic feel from this...sounds to me that the protagonist in this song has a pretty nice opinion of himself....would be cool to have him totally get led on, then rejected ...or possibly catch a nasty bug after being just in it for the night....:p
Cool song...

Nice fun upbeat tune dude. It sounds very good to me. Being a guitar player I would have put a solo instead of the synths and it would have probably ruined the whole thing, so I say the synth is awesome. It adds a real cool variation to what is going on if that makes sense. Nice song.

Hi

Good song, the guitar is a bit thin in the mix, give it back some low end!

Love the keyboard at 2"00, you must have been around in the 80s!

Good work!

Hey Brad - thanks for the kind words. Someone else mentioned Petty too ... with a little Springsteen flavor.

I'm always surprised at the strange twists other players can bring to a piece ... and hopefully the guitarist will do something amazing. We'll see, T ... if nothing of value is added, I can always leave it like it is.

I do like your idea of bringing it in in other places. I'm going to fool around with that thought and see ...

Why two delays? How are you using them? I take it there is a method/strategy to this. I'm interested to hear it.

I use multiple delays for effect and space, Trip ... sort of a reverb replacement.

One is set fairly close in a single slap -- basically to thicken the timbre of the vocal, and add subtle effect.

The second is to provide a "larger" space around ... and includes more feedback loops ... so it's meant to put the vocal in a larger place.

I was recently listening to Ben Fold's new album (I'm seeing him in Boston on Wed.) ... and was struck by his use of classic 80s synth (like this one) throughout. Thanks for the kind words.

My band was together from 79 to 85, Jack. I'm authentic retro. :)

Finally got back to mix this again, incorporating suggestions from the group here:

- Synth now appears at the hook right from the start
- Organ is mixed higher for movement in the verses
- Brought the bgvs up in volume
- Added more delay to wet the lead vocal
- Pressed the drums a little more aggressively
- Took more lows out of the acoustic guitar and pulled it slightly back

Gary hasn't finished the lead guitar experiment for the first part of the synth solo ... he lost the original file I sent him. I'll add it in later if it's suitable.

Hopefully folks will like the changes I made, for you're all the ones who suggested I make them. :)

New mix is up at the top.

Thanks!

Best,

Kev-
