Hey i'm just trying to get into some home recording and really don't know where to start, so far i have narrowed it down to the Lexicon Omega which runs into a computer, or the Tascam DP-01 that has its own hard drive. I can't decide which to go with, or even to lean towards. So if anyone could point out some good things or bad things on each i would appreciate it very much. the website for the Omega is http://www.lexiconpro.com/Omega/index.asp
and the website for the Tascam is http://www.tascam.com/Products/dp01.html
Once again any feedback would be awsome, thanks !

That's a loaded question. You have to decide what you are looking for. Which one will fit in with what you want to do? Do you need a lot of inputs to record a band, or just doing the solo thing? Do you need portability, or will you just be recording at home? How are they priced? Is the price the same? How much more equipment will you need to buy if you go with one or the other?
I'm sorry if I just complicated things for you. I am sure that you will get better feedback from some others, but your question asks more questions. In the end, you should read as much as you can about both units, and decide which one will work better for you, and go with that choice.

i own the lexicon and i love it it sounds great .... but the main reason i bought it was so i could record the whole band 10 drum mics 2 guitars and a bass all on seperate tracks.. oh yeah i use subgroups

yeah he's right ....what are your priorities.....lexicon is a really well built piece.
Tascam still comes off as toy-like...but that's just me.

Lexicon pairs well with the computer especially now because they got rid of 'Pro Tracks' and now they include 'cube' a more recognizable software.
That tascam looks nice though...must be brand new. hey do your thing and read!

Hey, I am think I am going to start off with just me, but will soon incorperate drums and a base. I already have a pretty nice computer that should be able to handle the Omega pretty well. Would i need much more equipment if i were to get the omega, beside mic's of course. The prices are about the same, depending on where u get each from. like you guys said i need to do some more research, thanks again

just so you know...I'm running Lexicon Omega......with Cool Edit....emachine with 512/120 ...... Marshall 990 condenser mic, Roland SP 606 Groove Station, Stanton ST 250 table top cd player, Alesis Drum Machine, Bass Guitar...hell I got a Yamaha MG 10/2 mixer that the Lexicon people told me I can incorporate as my main mixer -- and feed it to the Omega, which would remain as my interface to my PC. Pretty sweet. ...The punch line is --- I have yet to really NEED the Yamaha. But it's there in the wings, so when I do want to change things I'm ready.

The point is the Lex/Omega is a pretty nice setup...took a minute to get used to because it's layout is different from most mixers but it more than makes up for it in performance.

I think I have made up my mind

Sounds pretty sweet... and I think I have made up my mind after reading some of the posts about how confusing people seem to be finding it to use the DP-01, even though it is supposed to be very user friendly, and how everyone seems satisfied with the omega. I also think It would be nice to be able to use the computer moniter to be able to see and move around what I have recorded. Anyways, I look forward to setting it all up, now I just have to test out and decide what mic's I want!! Thanks for the input, its helped make my decision a bit easier. I'm sure I'll have some more questions as I start getting things set up. Thanks again.

One more question

I have one more question, and i probably should have asked it before... what is the real difference between recording with an 8 track, such as the DP-01, or recording with the omega through the computer? Does one have a better sound quallity than the other, or does it just really come down to which you prefer using? Is it easier to incorperate other equipment with one over the other? just had to get that in... i guess i havn't really made up my mind lol...

I like the lexicon/omega with my Cool Edit ...... it's cool like any of the software packages......seeing the multi-track display on your computer monitor. Manipulating tracks, editing the waveforms, adding effects its all like being a kid in grade school...lol....every minute is play time...can't beat it!!

In terms of differences.....I think its really a matter of preference. They both take about the same inputs, the omega only allows TWO inputs to record simultaneously.....check and see...but I believe the same holds true for the DP 01. Like I said go to the websites and study the features....they are both comparatively priced so chances are ---- It's all up to the user --- Y O U!

Good Luck

Lots of good can come out of using "Cubase" which is now the software packed in with the Lex.

I've been using the Omega/cubase for about a month. I can record 4 tracks at a time. Is that because of Cubase?

So for I am impressed with the Omega/Cubase. Great reverb sounds, nice compression. I'm old school and this is my first digital recorder! No more hiss or running out of tracks...I'm in love. :D
