I haven't seen one of those Gorilla amps in years! I remember the speaker blew and we had a clear coned Ampeg speaker we stuck into it. It turned into a monster gorilla for sure. Never forget the sound it had.

Fun pics, so I'll add mine to the mix, perhaps for some to chuckle and remember when they were just starting out. I made the "stand" to match the coffee table, and its clamped on the back with pads and a C clamp, so that it can someday be removed if I upgrade. Table doubles as a coffee table for those morning practice sessions. The 40g recording deck, two of the small mix boards and monitors and associated stuff, microphones included I think, fit into a stryofoam shipping crate that I have, and easily goes in the trunk of my Honda Accord.

Haha sweet! I picked it up used for $30 or $40 at a local music store as a small practice amp. It actually gets surprisingly loud.

I have the exact same desk, given to me by a neighbor who was going to throw it out, works great as a recording desk.

To Chris in Indy, why not give us a listen? If I knew how, I would try. To date my only accomplishments are recording on the Fostex, then getting this via a toslink cable to my Phillips CD burner to burn on a CD. Getting from a CD to a file to upload on a computer is not something I have done, but if I knew how, I would try. PS, my talent is certainly not earthshaking. I just record for fun, for a hobby. Better than watching tv.

That looks awesome! Do you find it is too bright in there with all of that wood?

I don't have pics of all the treatments that have been installed. But to answer your question, the room doesn't seem bright to me. I find wood to be a bit softer sounding than plaster or sheetrock.

so, yet another newbie here.

I'm visually-impaired, so describing my listening/work space might be a little tricky. Here are some pics I had a friend take though. I can't see them, so ... you get what you get here. I hope they're decent!

I've done some reading about room nodes, standing waves, bass traps etc. I understand the difference between absorption and diffusion, but I really don't know:
1. How to go about diagnosing and fixing problems with my room, scientifically.

2. How to tell if I need absorbers or diffusers in a part of the room, or both.

3. Is the ultimate goal for nearfield listening a mostly dead room, as dead as possible, live but with problem frequencies corrected?

and
4. Whether to go with Auralex or similar commercial products, or DIY.

Most important though... I am very serious about improving my mixing/mastering skills, and doing this for paying clients, as much as possible! I've found my preverbial calling so-to-speak.

What sort of professional am I looking for, who can come in with the requisite gear, take measurements, recommend products etc.? Are these folks called acoustic engineers, acousticians, what?

I'm in southern Ontario, near the greater Toronto area, if someone can recommend such a person I'd be very greatful!

I have no qualms about spending the money to treat the room I have. I can't realistically look at tearing anything down, until I'm sure I can attract paying clients, but I do want to treat the walls, get a bass trap or two etc.

For example, I'd love to bash out that dropped part of the celing you can probably see above the right-hand monitor. *sigh*

All I've done so far is:
1. Put a thicker curtain on the window at the rear wall (not shown in pics). and
2. If you can see a bookcase, on its right-hand end, I have a foam mattress we had lying around, propped up, to kill some reflections there. I've draiped a heavy quilt down the left-hand side of the same bookcase (not in pic). that's it so far.
