Yes, I understand about the reverb...well not really, I like effects. I feel more confident with them~!!

Everyone does, and it's cool to add some reverb or delay to a monitor mix in your headphones while tracking to give you a bit of confidence and help push the performance but, it's absolutely crucial not to record the reverb.

Once it's on there it can't be taken off, so..in a project like this without a dry vocal take I'll be spending about 90% more time trying to fit all the backing music into a reverberated space to compliment your vocal.

That's not the only reason though it is the biggest one.

Compression: most vocals will sit a bit better in a mix with compression but compression does weird and whacky things to reverb. So again I'd be looking to add compression to the dry vocal to get it balanced THEN add the reverb second in the chain.

Same thing goes with noise gates. I don't know your setup but say for instance you record your vocals in a small square room beside your computer which has a noisy fan.....between phrases I'm gonna hear that computer so I'll want to knock most of that out with a noisegate (or sometimes manualy punch it out in a wave editor). When you have reverb on the vocal you get reverb tails on the wave form holding the gate open longer or making for some unatural cut offs

So you see, dry is better  ooOO(hard n dry)....sorry...ex wife flashback there

I like the way this thing is going so far. What I'd love to have to work with before I do anything else is a dry lead vocal from cincy and a dry lead vocal from True, just their vocal with no backing music. A high quality mp3 would probably suffice, 256kbps would be nice same with a backing vocal from each of them, not even just one...as many backin vox tracks as you want to give me and let me comp them together

That way I'll have more of a picture in my head of what direction to take the full mix in. Hopefully Snake can get his organ up :o ....and...er...running :D and I can get that pieced in with Gorty's solo

I had no idea when I started this it was gonna turn into such a long running epic, can't believe the hits and replies it's had so far. I just wish I had some web space to offer for you all to upload your contributions to make it all a bit easier

Well, i just sent you 2 files in a PM Lemon. 1 is the lead vocals and other is the backing vocals. Both of them are dry, but then again they were dry the whole time :)

I need help witha question though for anyone to answer. When listening back to the vocals on their individual tracks, I noticed a problem and am frustrated now.

I can hear the music in the background on my vocal tracks coming through my headphones !!??!?!?

Is there anyway to prevent this? How does everyone else do it?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks ~

Just got your PM and sent you one back, the vox are great...what bleed? I probably wouldn't even bother gating that out it's so quiet. Any chance you can up the bitrate on your mp3's thought? 64kbps is a brutal compression rate. I'd like 256kbps but would settle with 160kbps since your takes are so clean and well captured.

...still miffed about your noise bleed, it's hardly noticable and totaly acceptable

Hey Cincy,

Seeing as I am here I will have a stab!
I have very little experience recording vocals so some greater suggestions may come from some others around here!
But,......Perhaps you can lower your volume into the headphones of the backing tracks and your voice, (monitor levels) not to be confused with the recording levels, and maybe the headphones are not insulated enough thus allowing too much bleed into your microphone!
I have two pairs of headphones (cheapies) and one particular pair bleed into the environment way more than the other.
Perhaps a different pair of headphones may be in order!

I am not a vocalist and by no means an expert in capturing vocals.
Just thought I would throw in a couple of uneducated suggestions!

Gorty, he needs no advice man, his vocals peak at -8Db, the bleed between phrases is sitting at -78Db ....tell me any human that can hear anything 70Db lower than the vocal in a mix when it's a tiny bit of bleed of the music that's playing anyway?...He's done a great job.

Well that's good to hear! :)

**blush**

well thanks Lemon, I appreciate the vote of confidence but I am at the very least going to shop for some better headphones and turn the monitor volumes down on the other tracks for future recordings...

Thanks for the suggestions gorty, I think I need to do those things at the least. I will trust Lemon over myself for recording experience since I have recorded like, umm, 2 or 3 tracks :D :D :D :D

But I dont like listening to just vocals back and hearing anything in the background... ;)

As far as the higher bitrate for mp3s..anyone out there have any suggestions? All I did was opened the wav file in SoundForge and did a "SAVE AS" mp3 and it just converted it..I had no choice for bitrate that I recall.

Any suggestions welcome

Lemon, thanks for explaining the 'WHY' on the reverb. I actually understand now, why you want it dry...the reverb that is  ...(not wanting to stir up those ex nightmares again! Barkeep !!! Bring Lemon another round of that Vodka!!) :D

Anyhouz, I will have Choc send me the files. Then I will send them on to you. :)

when you save the file, save as type: MP3 Audio(*.mp3)

Template: this defaults to 64kbps FM Radio quality, you have to open the dropdown box and select something higher that 128kbps CD quality. you want to use a transparent audio setting (160kbps and upwards) This is a couple of boxes under the file type box...2 I think?

Hope that helps you (and you True)

That's my girl! :D

Your voice is just crying out in this one True!..As Dogman said..."Very full of emotion"
This reminded me of some early Stevie Nicks/Christie McVie recordings!....That is meant as a compliment!

I, for one would like to hear just one vocal track by itself...seperate from the backing vocals and then add the backing vocals in, I want to hear everything your voice is conveying here. The backing vocals are taking control over the main vocal line in parts, but hey True......I dig very muchly!
You have something in your voice True that carries so damn well...I actually got goosebumps from this!

I would love to hear your lead vocal line with some low backing vocals by the Dogman himself! A single lead vocal line True with some subtle backing vocals that you and Dogman could work on and get the harmonies just right would sound awesome!

I have got this musical vision (now I'm starting to sound all fruity and creepy) of this tune heading in the direction of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty's.."Stop Dragging My Heart Around".....!!!
I think between the two of you a nice contrast could be displayed in this tune!

Great job on this one True.........Well Done Mum!...I'm proud of ya! :D

Groty
LOL !! Son, thanks for your support, or is it Bro today? :D

You are too kind. That would be fun to do some vox with the Dog and his weedwhacking voice!!!

Hang on to those fruity, creepy musical visions r00, those are where masterpieces come from. I am taking all that you say as compliments and thanks for your advice Gorty. I appreciate it much.

True :)

*You getting goosebumps isn't like one of those Jerry Springer type show based topics is it?..

...you know..."I luv my wife, she's the best sis a guy could have!"......or "my mum is my gurlfriend!!" * :D

Ok I just PMed you with the 256 bitrate version lemon...

Hey Gorty which program do you use to convert wav to mp3s? I grabbed this 30 day trial one and wondered what most people use?
