I've heard about people "leasing" beats. What exactly does this refer to and how does it work? I'm interested to know.

I think it is refering to giving someone the right to use your beat. you get a % of what they make off of the song. You have to first copyright your beat and once you own the copyright, you can lease your beat to someone to use it.

Leasing a beat is weird to me, just because music so unpredictable.

Take for instance, when u lease a car...you know that the value of that car is going to depreciate....so the owner of the car will try to get as much money from the vehicle as he/she can before the depreciation value is too low to mess with.

With a beat, you could give someone "exclusive rights"....basically ownership of the beat for a certain period of time....say 6 months for a fee of $1000, but what if the beat appreciates....meaning the person u gave the rights to ended up making let's say $100,000?

I know it's all hypothetical, but if you plan to lease the beat you'll need to have all kinds of "if" statements so if a song blows with ur beat as the meat and potatoes, you get feed too......cause all you'll end up doing would be sitting at home saying.."Man that fool ripped me off...making all that money off my sh*t and he aint giving me a dime"....when u could play it smart and figure out what you really want from your beats by sides reconition.

Don't think a beat can't blow from anywhere, not days you don't have to have 1 million dollar studio to get some play. You just gotta have a 1 million dollar hustle.

"Say Jake, Jill already up the Hill/Kickin' it with Mr. Trill/cause you lacked the hustle/ of a million dollar deal"

Its all in the leasing contract... it says you have the right to write something on it, but the beat maker himself or " if " someone purchased exclusive rights to that beat since you leased it gets like 50% of what you make on it... Its simple but its not really worth it to lease, I really think leasing is a cheap way of ripping someone off... And they deserve it too for not shelling out the extra 50.00 or 150.00 for something that is capabe of making them easily 50 grand ya know.. Leasing a beat is a foolz choice cuz it will only get you in trouble, and for all these cats that use instrumentals that arent theirs on there album lol, I cant wait till one of their albums does well and the label says we want to sell that exact album and the artist cant because he doesnt have rights to those beats, and you can bet anything the rights to the beats you've used will have already been gone just like the record label would be after they heard that... enjoy

it depends on your situation, if you dont want a 5 year commitment to 500+ dollars a month thats why they have leases.. There actually good deals for people.. I dont want a 4-5 year committment so i could easily avoid it for 200.00 a month for a year or 2.. buying the car, no its not worth it, its just like renting a car for realllly really cheap... figure its 25-45 dollars a day to rent a car and you can go get an acura rsx type S for 225.00 a month... if you think about it, its really smart for someone that wants to build their credit or doesnt need a car for the next 10+ years.. my aunt leases one all the time.. she lives in florida but comes up here in the summer.. So leasing is a good option for her... get me..? Beats on the otherhand are gay to lease lol...
