How good is the LE version that comes with the Firepod?

How does it compare to the other versions - what's it missing?

It says 48 tracks. Is there a limit on the total number of plug ins? Limit of plugins per track? Any limit on number of inputs?

If I get the Firepod I'm wondering if LE will be a step up from Cakewalk GT3

Im using LE with my firepod, and I love it. I've never used any other version of cubase so I dont have anything to compare. Comes with several good effects, and I have already downloaded a ton of free ones. Im pretty shure you could use a total of 6 plugins per track, 2 inserts and 4 aux. If you are planning on getting the firepod I reccomend downloading the cubase template from presonus website. It is setup for 10 track simultaneous recording without having to set anything up. The firepod has been my best recording purchase to date. As for LE, it seems like very capable software, and of course, is always upgradeable. It is definatly way above any "entry level" recording software ive used.

Found a comparison chart for Cubase. Scroll down to page 2 and you will see a comparison for Cubase LE, SE, SL and SX.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that Vestat.

For LE, it says 4 Physical Inputs/Outputs. How many inputs are you using with it Bigsnake?

Yeah that is strange, because I saw that before I bought my firepod. Like I said, you can record 10 "at a time" in LE. Just download that template, and it will automatically set you up a track for each of the 8 pres, plus one midi and the s/pdif digital out. You can arm all ten tracks and get ten different signals. I am running on a mac G4 powerbook that just meets the processor requirements, and I have recorded 5 inputs with no issues at all. If you are going to buy one of these I highly suggest doing it with musicians friend before their free offer ends. You get a free 80 gig firewire hard drive and an AT 2020 condensor mic. I daisey chain the firepod and harddrive, and send all of my recordings to the hardrive. It is also 7200 rpms, less chance for pops and stuff. Great little machine!!

That's good to know!

I bought a firepod yesterday and haven't had a chance to actually break it out yet.

However the sales guy at guitar center told me that with Cubase LE you could only record two tracks simultaneously.

I thought that was pretty lame of Presonus to include software that didn't allow you to fully use their hardware...but stranger things have happened.

He was trying to convince me to buy Cubase SE. I told him I'd play around with LE first.

All I need is basic multitracking. If LE lets me record all 8 at the same time, then I am set.

Yeah I just verified that...it's on the Presonus FAQ. You just have to go enable the inputs.

Sweet. Then it looks like LE is basically the same as SE

I use SE. I think the major downer for me with LE would be just the 2 inserts per channel.

Dont upgrade from Le to Se, you are only paying for a few more inserts. Save your money and get SL or SX

So how much is the upgrade to each? And what do you get for the extra cash?

It might well be worthwhile to upgrade to SL or SX for some but not for everyone.

If I had either of the fuller versions I would just be spending money on features that I don't need and wouldn't use.

I work at Guitar Center...In Guitar Sales.

But I can tell you this much...They need to re-train the clown who told you Cubase LE will only record two tracks at a time.

He was either ignorant, or smart, trying to sell you a version of Cubase that didn't come free with your Firepod.

Don't be upset at Cubase...LE is a great bundle.

Be a bit pissed at the snake who lied to you at Guitar Center to try to extort more money outta you.

yeah it's all good.

I am just stoked about the software! I actually called the guy back and gave him the info, told him it was on the Presonus FAQ etc.

I'm sure it was an honest mistake...and obviously some others have been confused by it too - being that it is the #1 most frequently asked question.

Does SE require a dongle like SL and SX?

No. There is no hardware dongle for Cubase SE. LE is a similar package that comes bundled with dongle hardware, on the other hand.

There is no dongle for the bundled Cubase LE.

I installed it on my desktop machine so I could do playback listening through my home stereo which that computer is hooked up to.

Sure I am probably technically breaking the license - but I just don't think everything is that black and white and if they bust down the door on me...then I guess I'll be telling that to a judge.

Point is, the software works fine without the firepod hooked up.

Good to know. Thanks!
