LDC on kick

Is there any problems in using a large diaphragm condenser such as the studio projects B1 as a mic for kick drums. i have had it recommended (on budget). I’d also use it for vocals and guitars. on the other hand i also read they are susceptible to damage from sudden gusts of wind such as with a kick... or would a screen or sock over the top be enough protection for the mic???

Yes, the gust of wind won't be good... nor is the B1 a good sounding kick drum mic IMO... but maybe you'll like it, use a pop filter with your B1 on the kick and it should be ok.

Edit: and you 'may' need an inline pad if you get on the beater.

The only time you really have to be carefull is putting it close to the hole on a ported head. If there is no resonant head there isn't a lot of air being forced.

so if i placed it slightly off to the side of the hole but facing it i should be able to get the sound i want with out damaging the mic?

do a search for "B1* and kick" and see what that turns up. generally speaking, no, the B1 will not give you a good sound on kick. of course, it depends on your kick, room, pres, etc., but IMO, while the B1 is very good on a lot of things......kick isn't one of those things.

you'd save yourself a lot of hassle and heartache by just investing in a kick mic. use the B1 for an "in front of the kit" mic or a mono overhead instead.

but will it work or get damaged? as long as you follow all the precautions listed above, yes, you should be able to USE it on kick without damaging the mic, results notwithstanding.
