huh Naka?, I heard the solo gtr on the left side bro!! so who's system is screwqed?? :D

Its yours,,,  we have everything opposite here. :D

Again Tim, cool playing.
The shaker part sounds like a good idea.

Btw I wasent to crazy on the drums, I just thought you threw them in there for a beat.
and the guitar was all that needed critique.

The drums needs more warmth and human touch to compliment the wicked guitars.

again great work :)

[Please describe the setups!]
apl – the repeating lead part and the rhythm guitar used a Peavey Patriot gtr > Zoom 504 > Presonus Bluetube pre on max tube drive > RNLA > Calif Blonde amp > SM57 at grill halfway between middle and edge of cone > Great River pre. The second lead was the same guitar > Boss compression pedal > Peavey Backstage amp > two mic’s – 57 at grill and a Schoeps mk41 a foot out. Large room, high ceiling. Drum machine was a vintage cheapo Yamaha box but my chick just killed it and threw it in the trash after having to hear it for the last few hours, heh-heh. Thanks apl.

Nakatira, I agree about the rhythm guitar and will adjust it – good call. :) Thanks.

Space – appreciate it. Tone-wise, perhaps I had the amp volume too low when tracking the rhythm gtr for the SM57 to be at its best with it. That part definitely needs tweaking.

[sun-warmth/glow-on-the-beach-at-evening-time warm tone]
bigbubba – thanks for the listen and descriptive comments. Yeah, needs real drums.

famous beagle – good suggestions about the 16th note figures – will do. Thanks for the kind words.

Dogman – Thanks man. I’m sending a note to RAMI right now.

mshilarious – ha ha… took me a minute to get it. In your honor I watched AI for the first time last night. Man, you must write their tele-prompter scripts. :D Who’s Ryan?

More later…

Hey Tim, wonderful playing! Sounds like you have as much command over an electric as you do a classical. I love the phrasing, and the whole laid back melody. The subtle flourishes here and there are really satisfying without being too much. That is a very nice tone on that lead guitar as well.
I would love to hear it with some nicer drums, but this has already been mentioned.

Hopefully this is something you're going to explore alot deeper. I know I'd like to hear it!

I'm a little shocked at this recording, lawler ;D

What can I hear that hasn't been said already......i think the tonal quality and the overall sound of the guitars is absolutely fine, all depends on the mood you want. Just a question of tweaking about a bit...

Concur on the percussion bit, just a soft little arrangement should do it.

... This could be quite a sexy piece, but as it is, i perceive it more as sleepy. Holding back is tantalizing ;) it's something I use to great effect myself.

As always, your guitar playing is excellent.

Tim, the guitar tones are great...I wouldn't change a thing. It's good to see you experimenting in other areas and expanding your already valued talent. The rhythm is very supportive and the lead is very soothing.

In addition to the drums, it also needs some bass git and percussion......then we'll all want to hear you sing :D

Very cool...very mellow. Until now, I've only heard your classical tunes...did you use a pick for this?

Tim, sounds GREAT! The rythm guitar is a bit wooly and is competing for space with the lead. It's a minor quible though. I won't comment on the drums ( :D :D :D ). We all do what we gotta do. I guarantee that if you had a decent real drummer with some latin percussion underneath it, this would be a DANGEROUS jam.

Ryan is the host, last night wearing the bad 3-piece

OK here's my serious comment: I just didn't know who you were in that track. It didn't say Lawler to me, except in a couple of places.

So don't change how you play, just change what you play. You are already an artist, stick with your sound and your technique. I am not saying only play one instrument or one style. I am saying even if you are playing a bad harmonica solo on a Neil Young parody, you should still be Lawler. Except that was me :o

Why not play the blues without changing your vibrato, or without changing your right hand technique on the rhythm guitar? That's what I'd like to hear :)

Nice job, Tim!

It desperately needs a bass track. (I realize that the point of the exercise was to experiment with the guitar, so no fault there.) Maybe I'll have some time this weekend :)

Thanks for the heads-up, BTW.

True – Mark of the Z! Glad you liked it. :) As far as what it sounds like… I was kind of thinking of the style of the song Smooth Operator mixed with Santana when tracking it.

ido, gbav, - appreciate the listen.

DavidK – I wrestled with the intonation – not so much with the bending, but just with the general left hand work since it’s such a light touch on elec compared to a classical guitar... so I’m glad it sounds reasonably in tune to you. Thanks.

Tonio – Thanks for checking it out. I listened for the glitch at :18 but I’m missing it. I’ll listen on cans again to check in more detail. Thanks

Supercreep – Good points re potential changes. Chuck Berry rules. Many thanks.

More later…
thanks for all the replies :)

I heard a similar sound (sounds like a harmonic) @ 2:02, so I assumed it was intentional. Or at least serendipitous.

Purge – I like the drum rumble idea… hmmm. Thanks for the phrasing comments. Glad you stopped by and listened.

Gorty, Travis – so the consensus is shoot the pfffty drummer and shear the wooly rhythm gtr! :D Thanks for your comments.

metalhead – definitely hooked on electric and going to do more with it… I appreciate the kind words.

madmush – shocked? Heh-heh… just wait until I do my Mac Davis imitation. I agree that sometimes less is more. Thanks mad.

Want to answer each post... hectic here ...be back soon

Very cool to hear you doing this, Tim!!!!

It sounds like you're having fun for sure.

The lead tone and playing is superb. I love the main 'melody' part.

The rhythm--You have a very cool strum style. Much of what you already know translates well to this near-cousin of an instrument. Naka was on the right track concerning the sound, except that instead of a high boost, try a low cut maybe first. And the reverb sounds just about right as it stands now. (I'm listening on so-so computer monitors.)

I'll say nothing about the drums. (Except that, of course!) On second thought, I like Mr. Creep's idea of some light percussion perhaps.

Hope you do more.

David Katauskas, Track Rat – Thanks guys. Hoping for real drums soon. David… just used a flatpick on the rhythm guitar

mshilarious – interesting perspective and food for thought. Probably a matter of spending more time with the elec to adjust to the touch. Thanks mshil. :)

Don – So add a bass track already!

Don and Tonio – I think I know what the periodic blips might be you’re noticing… I was touching the strings w/my right hand fingers ahead of when I played as I do in classical playing, so with the compression settings on the effects it was likely creating occasional added percussion or harmonics.

Incanus –There’s definitely a raw fun aspect to tracking at high volume that’s different than playing acoustically. …appreciate the comments Mr. Wizard.

Sounds great Don! The bass really fills it out. I like the three 8th note lead in to each phrase. I've really got to thin the tone of that rhythm guitar.
