I have a Delta 44 connected to my PC that outputs to my HP4 headphone amp That then outputs to my KRK V6s.

the problem I am having is that my useable volume level on the HP4 is like millimeters of rotation...

first of all, in the all the way down position, i can still faintly hear music playing out of my monitors...

secondly, the knob is just super sensitive to the point where its louder than I can bare with only milimeters of movement... this makes it difficult to adjust to a good level..

I am not sure I am making myself clear, but I need to make the knob less sensitive, and also, why is it that even in the all the way down position, i can still hear music?

I have been told that I should not alter levels within software due to data-loss and that all of my volume controls should be done via analog controls...

should I adjust the volume on the monitors themselves to a lower level so that I can move the knob more on the HP4? thanks to those of you who can decipher my plee....

adjusting on the speakers might help, also check and see if your outputing from the delta at -10dB or +4dB, if your at +4 try switching to -10

does it affect the quality of the sound by changing from +4 to -10?

cause I have messed with that a little but it didnt really help, just got me a little more movement..

I think I will do the fine tune volume adjustment on the back of the speakers, I think one is louder than the other anyways because if i slowly turn up the volume, the music sounds mono left for a minute until the right speaker gets up to volume, so I will have to adjust them so they are both the same level...

Changing from -10dBu to +4dBu does not affect quality, it's just the reference level that your gear is looking for.

Why are you running your monitors off of a headphone amp? I think that's your problem. You should be able to hook up the line outs of the Delta directly to the monitors at +4dBu level and be fine. I'm assuming you'll be able to control the levels via software control with the Delta.

i use a hp4 between my sound card and monitors. if the volume knob is too sensitive, turn down your monitors. as simple as that.

I am running the monitors through a headphone amp because I was told that using software volume control has a negative effect on the sound quality... Is this not true???

I was told to use an analog volume control.

Whoever told you that is either a moron or misunderstood the question.

This is MONITORING you're talking about.

This is JUST FOR YOU, and you should make it as comfortable as you can.

It has nothing to do with what's already recorded. That's a whole separate issue.

Use a software volume control or an analog volume control or a combination of the two --- which is probably what's causing the problem --- to your own liking and satisfaction.

As has been mentioned in all three of the previous answers, you don't need to follow any rules if you don't want to. -10dB, +4dB --- it's up to you and your monitors.

As for the bleed through, doesn't the HP4 have a monitor mute button. Why not use that when you want them completely off? Seems easier than raising and lowering the volume level.

Because sometimes I just want to listen to music at night quietly while other times i want to mix loudly... it would be nice to just turn the knob all the way down (cause my desk is slick wood and i have to use two hands to push in the monitor mute button, one to hold, one to push)

I heard that using software to control the volume loweres quality because it cuts data down or something.... I dont know but anyways, I now have the HP4 because of that and so I guess i will do a combo of everything said here

1. I will adjust each monitor down a little bit in volume via their individual volume screws, and I will equalize them..
2. I will lower the volume in the software a little bit
3. I will knock the level down to -10 (I still dont get why you have the choice of +4 or -10 if all it does is lowere the volume...)
