Perhaps you'd like to share your success story that outshines Lenny's accomplishments?
Why does a comment like this always get thrown out when someone expresses a negative opinion about someone rich and famous? I know your comment was not directed at me, and I'm sure you mean "musical" success ('cause like many here, I could list my accomplishments that would probably whoop Lenny's ass in the more important areas of life successes). But there's one thing I DO know. Although I chose a different vocation to be successful at, I may seem bold, but MY songwriting is better than Lenny's. I'm just not the personality type to have sought the limelight, adulation (or excessive wealth). I'm happy. Some people like Lenny a lot. That's their opinion. I think he is mediocre at best as a songwriter/musician. JMO.

Hey this is pretty fun. I can dis Lenny and score points at the same time.

Some of his tunes OK and some are truely awful like that one "Fly Away", big hit none the less.

He can cop those '60's and early '70's grooves and feels but after a while, so what?

Funny you should say that, because I'm smarter and and have better business sense than Donald Trump, but I choose to remain poor and insignificant because I don't like being in the spotlight and having to worry about the billions of dollars I've amassed. I mean, who needs those kind of headaches, right?

wow Buck's logic is complex. Goes a bit like this . . . I write a song (or do "something") and made money (for him this "successful"). I am now famous (his happyness).

And now, here is where it gets complex, If an artist (or whatever) of that 'genre' does not end up 'successful' and 'famous', they are poor and insignificant. So let us not give our negative opinions about them.

I am enlighted and will now do a search and read all you other thousands of posts to learn more about you complex and logical thought patterns.

If you're smarter than Donald Trump, you would've understood what I said -- but you didn't. One can be rich (not just monitarily) and significant without being in the spotlight and amassing billions of dollars. I'll match your  and raise you one

Okay, I'll see your  and raise you one more.

Lenny Kravitz played for years and years before he became famous and got tons of radio airplay. He used a stage name of Romeo Blue and was basically ignored by the big-shots at the major labels. But he stayed in the game despite the odds being against his ever making it big. He improved his songwriting and his guitar playing, his vocals, and became an accomplished sound engineer. Finally, after several years of "paying his dues" his hard work paid off in the form of a big record deal, radio airplay and the fame that goes with being a big rock star.

You, on the other hand, write better songs and play guitar better.... or so you say. Yet, you choose to do it at your own pace and by your own rules, enjoying limited, local success that is enough to keep you satisfied.

What can we deduce from this?

You're lazy. You don't have enough confidence in your songs or playing ability to go out there and conquer the world with them. You have no tenacity. You talk a good game, but can't actually play it.

Then you have the nerve to talk about how mediocre Lenny is????

If you were that much better of a performer, as you claim, then you should do something about crappy players like Lenny Kravitz. You should go out and land a big record deal and show us all how much better you and your music can be than all those no-talent hacks out there like Lenny Kravitz.

If you won't do that, maybe you should refrain from trashing musicians who worked their asses off and sacrificed everything to become famous. I agree that a person can be rich without having lots of money. But if you were so "rich" and happy in your little world, why do you need to slam someone who has worked 100 times harder than you to attain his fame and fortune?

Lastly.... okay, so you're more talented than Lenny, right?

Who do you think supermodels and actresses are going to be more attracted to... you or Lenny?

Your turn...

Depends

If you are just asking about his guitar talents I'd have to agree. But as a musician, songwriter, producer, etc. I'd have to disagree.
I was given a copy of Baptism by a friend who didn't like it. He is one of those people that just buy Cd's for the songs they play on the radio so he didn't get the rest of the album. I think it's well produced (it actually has some dynamics and an analog feel) and diverse yet still has some commercial success. I think that speaks volumes considering a lot of other crap that's getting airplay. Plus, he played all the instruments.

Commercial succes and good musicianship are not mutually exclusive!

Lenny is a guy that found a way to become successful at something he loves, and he does it on his terms more than most people in the biz. He's an OK songwriter, a good all-round musician, a great producer, and a great entertainer. Not many people in the biz have a skill-set that deep (Prince comes to mind). He's paid his dues and perservered to get where he is.

I would never trash him just becuase he's had more musical success than I have. I do just the opposite, in fact.

I'm right there with you honedawg...

I think he is a "whole package" guy, so skill on any one thing isn't his point. I rather admire the Renaissance approach.

Well, he has shown that he at least has the ego to be a star. Isn't that SOMETHING?

:p

Either that or he's a B.S. artist.

I think we all know that success in the music industry has nothing do to with being a "poser" or not....look at Britney, Christina Aguilara, the Back Street Boys, etc. etc. etc.

You call that diatribe a "raise"? You didn't even "call" me, pal. Whatever. By the way, a lazy guy doesn't build his own log house. I could go on and on.......but, 'nuff said. Reply if you want -- I won't.

p.s. I live by the line in my signature. Family-rearing is simply more (most) important to me with the limited time I have at this point in my life.

Very true. But since the original question about LK was not specific, and since this is a guitar forum, I'd have to respond to it from a guitar player viewpoint:

The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard is one of these guitar magazines saying he was the new Jimmy Hendrix!!! NOT EVEN IN YOUR DREAMS...

Now going back to jfrog's idea, what he's become is truly a POSER, no more than that.

I think Kravitz is a pretty inconsistent songwriter from song to song, and has less skill as a songwriter than others in his league. That said, I'm happy for his success - he's doing alright.

He's a pretty weak guitar player, but gets the job done with some nice tones and decent arrangements.
