Korg D12 digital recording studio hard drive

I need to know what hard drive do I need to go into the Korg D12 digital recording studio. Mine just says initiating and that's all. It was working before I moved. And now nothing. Please help.

There is someone on Reverb offering a D12 with a 40G hard disk.
Therefore, it is going to be an ATA 40G drive. Probably 2.5".
Open it up, and take a look. A higher capacity drive may also work, but might only be seen as 40G.
Your fault could be due to loose cables, so try making sure nothing's worked loose inside.
You can also download the manual, which may tell you all.
Also, there may be a backup battery inside, which needs replacing.
I doubt something that ancient would have an SSD drive, or SATA.

Being honest here - if the drive has died, which is not unusual with old drives, you need some skills to be able to remove it, replace it and format it. The manual details downloading the operating software and then using scsi, but it says it can also be done from a cd driver. the manual details all sorts of recovery methods. which have you tried, and what happened? They're on UK ebay for around £100 working, so maybe just buy another?

The SOS review of the D12 states a 6GB hard drive, which is really small and unlikely to be found. However, that's probably due to the cost of hard drives at the time. I see several references to 20 and 40 GB drives being used. It appears that it is a standard IDE type drive. The SCSI reference is for an external drive. SCSI was very common back in 2001 when the D12 was released.

From what I can see, the drive is probably a MK6014MAP Toshiba 2.5″ hard drive with a storage capacity of 6GB and featuring a IDE interface. MK6014MAP Toshiba 6GB 4200RPM ATA-66 1MB Cache 2.5-inch Hard Disk Drive.



As Rob said, installing the OS on a new drive may be a problem.

Check Youtube for videos on the insides of the D12 and D16 recorders.

I did run across a place that sells SSD replacments for 2.5" IDE drives. Basically they are connecting a MSata SSD to an IDE interface, but the device should not see any difference.

It would give you the speed of an SSD plus silence, as there would be no spinning disc. They are pretty cheap, with a 20GB running around $28.
