Is it worth it to spend more $$ on a matched stereo set of neumann km184s? I bet their QC is good, but i noticed that you can get them for around $450 and a matched set for $1200 or so. Is it worth it to spend the extra $300 on that? I plan on using them mainly for Drum overheads in my basement project studio.

whaddyathink?

I have a matched pair of KM-184s and love them. I haven't tried the Josephson's though. I got my KM-184s on ebay for $820, and would never pay full price for these. You can find them on ebay all the time.

The only place where the matched pair will really make a big diff is in stereo piano/classical type music. Drums are not that big of an issue. So, I would say save the $$ and don't worry about it. These mics are great and should be close enough as is.

$$$$$$$$$$

whats the most i should pay for a km184? in mint condition, say used for 2 months? and you got your matched set for $820? that sounds really good.....hope i find something. what preamps are you running them through (say for drum overheads?) Ive got an avalon 737 and im thinking on getting another and link them or maybe a good stereo preamp.....

whats a nice stereo preamp for drum overheads? how is the AD2022 on overheads?

thanks folks and folketts

I think you should be able to find a nice used pair of 184s for $900 or less. Currently, my only outboard pre is the RNP, and that's what I use for overheads. I'm happy with the sound, but I hope to add some additional flavors in the future.

The Neumann KM184's are definitely nice mics (I own a pair). They aren't matched though. They're just stereo pairs - sequential numbers on the shells. If I were buying now I would go for a matched pair of Josephson C42's. You can get a brand new pair for the same price as an ebay pair of KM184's.
