I was bored today so I recorded 5 mics on kick.
The mics where all in the same spot on the kick just out side of the whole on the front
head, The mics are 1. D112 akg 2, Audiotechnica pro25 3, audiotechnica ATM25
4, electrovoice re15 5, Shure KSM32 Used the last two just for fun had never tried
them on kick.
There was no level adjustment made on the preamp for the differant mics
except i did switch in the pad on the shure ksm32.
You will find the file just above the Beatles picture
Let me know what you think. http://herm1.com/

Wow, is it just me, or did that Shure KSM have a lot of low-end boom to it?

I was really surprized. I guess it's tough to say how it would fit in to a mix . . . it might just get buried, but it is surprizing that the KSM delivered that much bottom.

Other than that, I like the AT mics. Very little difference, except the Pro let a little more of the ring through.

When listening, I deliberately put it at a modest volume, and went in my basement to hear how well the sound would "shake the walls" and carry in to a different room. The shure won that test, but again, that boom may not always be desirable.

Thanks for posting. It was very helpful.

Because it's not traditionally thought of as a kick-drum mic like the others are that he tested.

oh, I didnt know there were "traditional" kick mics..

quit being a wiseass, ameth. :)

Yea, the d112, the atm25 . . . people normally mention these when you say something like "What's a good kick-drum mic?" As for the Shure ksm, I usually hear that one mentioned as a good "all-around" swiss-army knife-type mic.

I think the pro 25 sounds the best out of the 4. The pro 25 seems to have a little more natural high end than the atm25. I guess that's my own opinion, but for $60, there's nothing to think about.

I like a u47 on kick myslef.
Why do you get on a home recording forum and just casually mention that you use a u47 on kick? What possible constructive use could that have for a home recording audience. It seems like you just want to take a second to show us non-professionals how cheesy we are that we have to use a D112 or an ATM PRO 25.

No, I wanted to illustrate that there is no "traditional/best/whatever" mic for anything. But I'm not so eloquent, so whatever. Use *your* ears, not the guys on the recording forums (who may or may not know what they're talking about).
