Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

If using the Recorderman OH setup, does it make sense to place the kick mic the same distance from the strike point of the batter head as the two overheads are? I never see that mentioned, but was wondering if there's ever phase issues with the kick if the kick mic is closer to the impact point than the overheads are. Placing everything equidistant from the kick impact point would put the kick mic out in front of the kick, however... reducing the punch and increasing resonance picked up.
 
I don't think you want to put the kik mic about 36" (3 feet!!!!) away from the head. You could always try it, but it's not a requirement of the recorderman method.
 
I use Recorderman (sorta) and I put a beta 52 just inside the reso head. To a degree, the more ya pull it back, the more bottom. The closer to the beater, the more click.

Yeah, I use a b52 as well, and need more bottom/reso, since I've got a two-person band, drums and electric guitar...so I need all the bottom I can get since there's no bass going on!
 
You could make a subkick. That'll get ya the oomph.

I made one out of a cheap Radio Shack sub, an inline pad and an old snare stand I wasn't using.

I'll see if I've got pics if you're interested.

I'm definitely interested. I've used the Yamaha subkick on stage once (it was the opening band's drummer's subkick) and I thought it was cool and sounded deep when he was playing (couldn't tell when I was playing, but I'm not the intended target).

Too expensive... I'd love to learn how to rewire the right speaker and make one myself. Could be very useful in my set-up.
 
I just looked and have the pics on my pooter at home so I can send em tonite.

I paid about $30 for the speaker, $20 for the inline pad switch, and chopped the end off one XLR cable. (make sure you chop the right end...unlike some boob I know :rolleyes:)

Wire the pos on the XLR cable to the neg on the speaker. Vice versa for the others and then for the shield wire (probably copper uninsulated), I just took a file to the speaker chassis til I got nice clean metal and twisted the wire down tight. It could look more pro but I'm all about function. ;)

The key, I think, is the inline pad. The signal coming from the sub is really hot. I tried just kickin a pad from my pre but it's gotta be padded before it hits the pre.

I track with it all the time but it doesn't always get used.

I'll grab da pics tonite. Pretty easy stuff except for figuring out mounting and I found that old snare stand works great.

The reeeally blurry one is a Shure a15as but have seen other pads that are cheaper.

Nice Dogbreath! I'm going to build two... I'm thinking about building a smaller one to mic up the rear of an Orange git amp as well... see if I can capture some low end out of the amp.

Recording this weekend went well. I'll do a quick mixdown and post the tracks. For my first time doing my own "real" recording, I'm thrilled with the drum sounds I got.
 
Thanks for posting the picks Dogbreath. No I have to try and make one for myself. Yamaha wants almost 400.00 for a sub kick. BTW I really like the songs you have on your page. Have a good one.
 
Hey Dog, not to sound dumb but what is a pad? I don't know that term. I think I found a good speaker for my sub kick. I have an old 150 watt sub with duel 6 1/2' Yamaha's I Think that would be good for this. Thanks.
