Raaallfff

Just thought I'd share this hot and nasty tasting crap coming-up my throat since the D112 is at the top of the poll at this particular point.:o

I know it's a popular standard (I guess it is; though I'd probably argue that an RE-20 is just as much of a standard), but I still hate it!

Of course, this is nothing but my opinion and is the reason I bring this up; just to show selection of gear is a personal thing. My gosh, I'd hate to tell you how much money I've spent on trying gear out only to find (or should I say realize) it's not good enough for me and sold it, for at times, less than half of what I bought it for, just a few months ago or even a few weeks or days ago!!!

Yes, it can get rather expensive at times, but I'm now realizing that the price I'm paying is well worth it as each purchase I make (whether I love it and keep it or hate it (at the time) and sell it for dirt), I'm training my ears and am learning about my own personal preferences and what I need gear-wise, and what I need to do with it once I have it!

Well Since You Asked...

My Trident-MTA Series 924 Console of course!!! Considering I'm asking $7800 and encouranging offers of even less... Though IT, itself, is not dirt!;) And you know the ONLY reason why I'm getting rid of that one...

Look in the For Sale Forum for more dirty, but rare things.:D Although most of the stuff I'm selling now days is not because it's not good enough, it's because I need what I can spare to go to Westhaynestein; the whole reason I'm selling the 924 as you know!

I mean I sold a Peavey VMP-2, Behringer T1953, and a Lexicon Signature Two for dirt about 4-5 months ago and they sure were good enough for me!!! OK, given I had Mullard CV4004s through-out the VMP-2 (though for a different sound, I'd sometimes put Sovtek 5751s in the 1st slots) with Telefunken 12AU7s on its outputs, CV4004s in the T1953, and for the Sig Two, a Mullard ECC83 at the input, a Tele 12AT7 in the 2nd slot, and a CV4004 in the 3rd. I got a matched-pair of NOS Mullard EL34 xf2 to the Sig Two modded for EL34s instead of EL84s, but never got around to it.

Most of those tubes I still have and would consider selling them if the price is right.;) Only since you asked...

yup

It really is pretty chilly in the midwest aye? ;)

Just trying to help... Dude... :p :D ;)

Yeah the temp dropped 40 degrees in two days. hehe

Really, I am not meaing to come off grumpy, it is so hard to show subtle humor when you have to rely on computers.

I appreciate everyone's comments to the post as they are all very helpful. I just can't get my hands on an RE-20 right now (*saving for a VT-1 ) and I really am trying to get feedback about these 4 mics cuz that is how much I will have left to spend....

Nothing but love

I've got a Peavey 520TN that somebody briefly mentioned earlier and I've been pretty happy with it. It's got a lot of top end to it which is sometimes a good thing and other times not so good. Look around and eventually you'll find somebody unloading equipment at a decent price and buy used. Chances are that if you hate a mic you can sell it again for what you paid for it.

heres one

I came across an old AKG D12 not a 112 yes a 12..... big square thing. Gave a real nice sound for the kick (very warm) but on AKG's reccomendation I use it for my floor tom (which sounds amazing) and on some vocals!!!!

I own most of the mics we're discussing. This is the usual order of preference here:

Audio Technica ATM-25
AKG D-112
Audio Technica Pro 25
Sennheiser MD-421
AKG D12E

A band brought in their Shure Beta 52's last week and I tried them on kick, but pulled them after about 5 minutes of screwing around with the eq, trying to make it sound good - too "puffy" for our use. I would never buy one.

If we owned an EV RE-20, it would probably fit in the list between the Sennheiser 421 and the AKG D12E.

When choosing a kick mic, we listen for solid bottom end with good beater definition and try to avoid using eq as much as possible.

Another to mention

Forgot to add the Beyer M88. I have one and use it on occation, but really haven't played with it all that often on the basss drum since the ATM-25 for the mic inside flips the bill most of the time; don't fix it if it ain't broke. So, I use it all the time live for back-up vocals. But the little I have used it on bass drum, it'd absolutely be worthwhile to look into further and I know there has been quite a few followers of the M88 on bass drum in the industry for years.

HELP: kick drum mic purchase...

A Question,

I've been using the AKG D-112 for a while now and am not too happy with the sound of it and am thinking of purchasing the ATM-25 to use as the main kick drum mic.

Would you recommend me keeping the AKG D-112 around to possibly mic outside of the bass drum or even on the kick side of the bass drum???

Or do you think this is unnecessary and would kill the sound of the ATM-25 alone???

Has anyone used the ATM-25 as a bass guitar amp mic??? How's it sound??? I was able to get a decent bass amp recording from the D-112.

Also - about the bass drum sweet spot. I have moved my AKG D-112 around alot in and out of the bass drum and am still unhappy with the sound. Can anyone who's successfully acheived getting a good sound give me a precise idea where the kick drum sweet spot is located? I'm using a Tama Rockstar kit.

Let me know if you have any answers and/or recommendations!
Thanks.

PL-20. Wich essentially is the same as the RE-20. Just a different color. Great mic!
Sometimes i prefer a Beta 52.
As long as i dont have to use shure sm91 im glad. Havent got any good results with that one at all.

I've got the Senn 602 and a PL 20 and I prefer the 602 for most stuff. I know it has a sound of it's own, but it's a good sound. I guess if I wanted a kick drum sound that was totally real and just like the drum I would use a Beyer ATGX50 or an Audix D4. The D112 is good too, it just doesn't have as much subs as the Senn 602. But let it be known that I always use a second mic mixed in as well, like an Audix D2 or an EV PL95.

OK now, as from today I have another fav. kick mic, the dual element Audio Technica AE2500.
What a great mic!! All the low end - and all the attack you'll ever need, and without the possibility of phasing problems caused by multiple mics.

Apart from that we have a 2 x D112, one D12, a never used Beta 52 and an EV RE27N/D.

My 'most used' set-up for a big fat kick sound is a D112 just outside the hole (point 1" approx. in), and a padded Neumann U89i about 2 feet away from the kick. I think the AE2500 is going to take over, altough I'd have to use it a couple of times more to be sure.

I thought your price point for the at pro25 was alot higher than the $35 I paid for one.

I lack the experience with drum mic'ing and multiple other mics you mention to be of much use in this discussion, I can say that I occasionally use D112 as a vocal mic (no shit), and it's $199 at www.macmidimusic.com. I did A-B it against the Beta, and for my purposes (mostly Djembe and Doumbek) it was the winner, and it works for me in combo with the right overheads. Thanks for the tips on the EV and AT options!-Richie
