Kerry King -help me understand

Prob gonna gets some flames for this but maybe some of you guys can explain this to me.
Every single slayer solo ive ever heard just sounds like utter krap to me. You know how it goes, lots of whammy drops and pulls and then fast runs that sound like they were meant for a different song. Am i the only one who sees it this way? lol
I love metal but slayer/kerry i was never able to get into. Im only 21 so maybe i just missed something crucial from that time period.
 
Ya...its called speed metal. If it wasn't fast it wouldn't be called speed metal.;)
 
Yeah, but....

I think the solo he did in "no sleep 'til Brooklyn" pretty much summed it up. They do all sound similar, especially if you listen to Iron Maiden 30 seconds afterward...Oh Boy!
What you have to keep in mind is that Kings solo's reflect a genre and more specifically Slayer themselves. Maybe not as harmonic and thoughtful as they could be but wouldn't that just suck in a song named "piece by piece"?
 
Dont worry I dont like slayer much either. I think the singing sucks. Ive been into metal for a while now and I'm not the only one that doest like slayer.
 
Yeah, I can see where you are coming from. Those solos just kinda unmusically fly all over the place.

My initial reaction was the same, "ok.. this isnt like Megadeth where you can actually hear notes being played".. but then they are not really Megadeth anyway.. I think you can look at this one of two ways: 1. Wow, how unmelodical. What utter crap.. I don't get it and I never will; or 2. OK, this is anti-god speed metal. Therefore, maybe a "solo" in utter chaos flying after such words as "Auschwitz, the meaning of pain" is meant to sound unmusical and chaotic.

99.9% of the time, a group that you think sounds terrible will always sound terrible.. But sometimes that .1% can come through if you approach it from a different angle. I found this to be the case with Slayer.

I see what you guys are saying, its not really that i hate slayer as a whole. I don't dig the vocals much but overall the music is ok. Its like whenever its time for a solo he just does whatever really fast and it doesnt matter what notes are being played. Hes could prob play mary had a little lamb over angel of death and at that speed, who would know?
 
I love it. Almost like controlled chaos. Don't get me wrong, I like notes better, but for the atmosphere that Slayer's rhythms and melodies provide, the King/Henneman dynamic really works for me. Have you noticed that (at least on Seasons) they'll ballance a nutty solo with a technical solo? (maybe some tapping, melodic minor runs, etc...)
 
You know what's really crazy about Slayer... every time I've seen them live, they both play those EXACT same solos. Which means they know what they're doing, even though it's totally chaotic.

I used to think that Slayer's solos were the weakest part of the music, but for some reason, they've grown on me. I just don't think they would be the same band with precise Marty Friedman type stuff, or pentatonic Hammett type stuff.

Yeah... I've seen them live three times, and they play those solos just as they are on the albums.. amazing.. kinda grew on me too after seeing that...

Now Kirk Hammett.. that's another story... :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Same experience for me, too. Saw them on the Clash of the Titans tour, and the songs were dead up (no pun intended) like the albums, although sometimes even faster. Some of their leads work for me, others don't, but I could probably say that about most guitarists I listen to.

I've only seen Metallica once (Damage Justice tour), and I've gotta say you're right about Kirk. The whole band was rather sloppy, which surprised me considering how tight the music is on their recordings.

Slayer, on the other hand, was locked in the one time I saw them. Actually all four of the bands on the Clash of the Titans tour were tight when I saw them, with a big "hell yeah" to Megadeth. They took "Hangar 18" to a new level that night. :cool:

Ditto on the Slayer thing, saw them on the same tour with Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Megadeth, and maybe someone else? (too long ago..) Slayer rocked!! Solos and rhythm section were note for note "on!" I wasn't wasted for that show (I was the designated driver babysitting a friend who was tripping) so I know what I heard wasn't enhanced organically or chemically, and I was really blown away by it.

BTW: Megadeth sucked, ...BAD. Mustaine was puking sick and they sounded sloppy as hell. Dave Mustaine siad the only reason they played at all was because Ellefson was a hometown boy (MN gig) and they couldn't be 'dissin' his people.

First saw Metallica on "Master" tour opening for Ozzy. I don't remember anything about that show except that everything sounded soooooo good, musta been the chemical enhancements, heh... I think the reason Metallica's rhythms are so tight is all Hetfield, I've heard he does *all* the rhythm guitar on the albums and leaves most of the solos to Kirk.

I'm gonna have to go home and listen to "Ride the Lightning" tonight, that's always been my fav Metallica album.

Ever since I discovered Cradle of Filth I forgot about slayer. But thats just slayers style. Their solos dont make any musical sense. Its just a depiction of the decent into hell. I think their most vicious and brilliant solos can be heard on the songs 213 and divine intervention.

That was the Clash of the Titans tour, dude! Just those four bands, with AIC as a kinda last-minute add-on to avoid the issue of which of the big three would open each night. From what I remember, the big three rotated slots from night to night, allowing each band to be the closer every third show.

Man, that's a shame, 'cause they were the best band when I saw them at Deer Creek in Indianapolis (for $6 :cool: ). No frills as far as wild stage show or the like, but the playing was awesome.

That's true about Hetfield doing all the rhythm work, or at least it has been that way in the past. I was supposed to see them on that same tour at Mesker Amphitheatre in Evansville, but James broke his arm skateboarding and the band didn't play. Lars and Cliff came out and broke the news to the crowd; that was the only time I ever saw Cliff alive. Lots of folks got their money back and left, but I guess Hetfield's guitar tech did the rest of the shows and James sang. Too bad they didn't do that for us. :(

I'm gonna have to go home and listen to "Ride the Lightning" tonight, that's always been my fav Metallica album.

That was in Montreal, with Guns N' Roses.
Lars excused themselves but Axl quitted THEIR show, because he was upset...leading to major riots in downtown Montreal.

Yeah, and he was in a big-ass cast/brace while it healed... and the tech played rhythm while he sang? Or am I mixing together my Metallica history?

Now you've got it right, sir.

Mesker has some pretty steep concrete inclines/ramps, so of course James had to go and prove that he's not Tony Hawke. :rolleyes: My one chance to see 'em with Cliff, and James had to go and forget to take his uncool pills that morning. Of course he stopped taking them regularly sometime during recording of the Black Album, and shortly after that he went off them permanently. :D :p :D
