Alright so my band is trying to make our own home studio, we just bought a tascam m512 mixer and tascam 38. Aside from that what should we look into getting. Let's assume that I also have zero knowledge of recording so something as simple as condenser mics would be an appropriate answer

Right. The mixer will mix your 8 tracks down to a stereo recording, so you'll need a way to record that. You could probably just mix it into a computer soundcard or something, though. If you want to keep it all-analogue up to that point you'd be wanting to get a stereo recorder of some kind.
Alternatively, some people track the song to a multitrack machine, and then import it into a computer and mix it using DAW software.

If you want to do things analogue-style, it's probably worth also getting some outboard effects at some point. A multi-effects unit would work, it can be used to provide reverb during mixdown, or re-patched to add echo or delay during tracking. An outboard compressor unit is also handy to have, but less essential.

I'm not familiar with that mixer but I think it should provide most of what you need, e.g. phantom power and preamps to drive a condenser microphone.

Attention to the treatment of the room you plan on recording in will be as important if not more important than equipment choices. There are some very good threads in the "studio building" forum here. Start reading, its a lot to take in but you will save yourself time, money and anxiety. And welcome!

Also, if you can give us an estimated budget, that will help us with the suggestions. Welcome aboard!
