Glad to have been some help, please keep us informed as you work through this.

Whoopy: is there any chance of posting a short soundfile of the offending channel? When you do the test tone, does ch1 stay about the same level as the rest? No dropouts or cutouts?

Don't really have the means to digitize it at the moment. The problem is now on channel 7, of course, and signals recorded to it are definitely quieter than on the other channels. If I'm recording over an area of the tape that I've already recorded, I don't really get much in the way of dropouts, but I do start to get them the instant the head hits a section of tape that has not been recorded yet. I'm guessing it's a bias issue. If it persists after I calibrate, then I'll start to worry, but for now I think I'm in good shape.

Speaking of good shape, this machine seems to be in surprisingly good shape. I haven't been able to identify any serious problems. It has some head wear, but the sound is still fine on both the sync and repro heads.

Is anyone of the opinion that it may be a bad solder joint on that channel card?

Maybe just an oxidized adjustment pot.

...............................;)

Or a bad pot for the bias or erase. I actually have a bad bias pot on track two on my 38. That's where I think I've heard that sound. I can barely get it to fall back without it falling into distortion. I know it's not the heads because the head were relapped. I've tried cleaning it with Caigs too but that wouldn't fix it. But you can get it so it sound OK, or replace the pot. I guess we'll find out when he calibrates.

I can see that there is some kind of motherboard the cards are on. Do they just slide out?

They should slide out and make sure to wear a static strap. The older electronics had no protection diodes and you can zap them without ever knowing it (or feeling it).

If you'd taken notice of all the posts in this thread, you would have seen that Whoopy had worked this out.

However I wasn't wearing a static strap, so my heart kind of skipped a beat when I read in his post that I could easily have ruined the card. Both the ones I touched are still working as before, though, fortunately.

If you had taken the chance to read my post you would have noticed that I advised him to wear a static strap.

Hi,
I just bought a atr 60-16 here in Norway, but its completely out of control and needs adjustment. But ufortunaltey I dont have the manual for it. Is there any way you could send me the pages with the adjusting instructions, or lead me to someone who can?
I would really appreciate it. Thank you, and happy new year by the way.
Thanx,
-Henrik

Henrik,

Could you give us some more details of the problems with your ATR, the more information you can supply, the more chance of us being able to assist.

Re the manual..........Unfortunately, at present I have no way to scan anything and I'd have to find my manual as our studio was packed up in a hurry some months ago because of some minor flooding and I have no idea where it was put. BTW, I received your PM:)
