it sounds to me like you guys are fighting probably the most common problem with mics today - all the new crop of imported mics are hyped inthe top end to fool the user into thinking it is "clean" or "detailed"...
Actually, the thing I liked about the position I mentioned 2 post ago was that the high-end didn’t sound hyped. But you’re correct, not having a flat mic is what’s giving me all this grief.

I primarily “flatpick” (that’s using a flat pick to pluck the strings) a couple of very expensive steel-string guitars (more like $5000 instead of $25k, though) and need to have as accurate sound as possible. Flatpicking a steel string into a mic with a hyped high-end results in a very harsh and unpleasant tone. I guess my problem is, I refuse to think that I can’t find something for under $300 - $500 that’ll get me 80-90% there. One thing though, I've learned in the last day or two, and that is it’s going to take a SDC mic, not a LDC, at least in this price range, anyway.

jnorman - you've described the problem in a nutshell - it's not lack of detail that gets me, it's this cold, harsh sound with noticable frequency boost that's killing me - sounds not too bad with a whole heap of other stuff in the mix, but if you want to record just one guitar, the sound is nowhere near good enough.

I'm trying to record a $4000 guitar, which is a superb sounding instrument, using 2 x $200 mics - guess it's just not going to happen for me.

Scary to hear you describe 184s as medium range too, pricing -wise - I was considering them maybe, but if they're medium range, then I don't think I want to know what high end costs! - looks like my money may be better spent in a studio - I wouldn't mind investing a lot of money in a pair of SD mics if I knew exactly what to buy - but it's looking like I'd need a significant preamp upgrade too to get what I want.

I just don't really like recording studios - oh well....
