just bought a tascam 388 studio 8-questions??need help!

I just bought the good old tascam 388,and i was wondering what i could do to run it w/ my computer-what are the possibilities??I have a seasound solo using cakewalk sonar software. What necessary cables etc would i need. I have plans to recor my guitars on the tascam 388-but the rest of the instruments digitally. Any help would be appreciated-I'm a newbie to all this home recording

If you have eight line level inputs on your soundcard you could use either the tape out RCA jacks or the Buss Out 1 to 8 RCA jacks to transfer tracks from the 388 to the computer. If you haven't you can still use the Stereo Buss Outs but you'd have to transfer tracks one or two at a time.

The only question is: does your soundcard have analog to digital converters (I'm not au fait with soundcards)?

The 388 runs SMPTE sync master/slave, but you'll need a synchronizer box interface.

With SMPTE sync the 388 can output or chase the clock signal, as either master or slave. However, I don't think there's a large user base who's used the 388 to it's full SMPTE slave capability. I believe the most common use would be to lay time code onto track 8, and have the 388 output the time code and 7 analog program tracks, while the 'puter chases and syncs to the reel deck. I believe in most cases an external sync adapter box would be required. Tascam made a few sync boxes.

Or, you could just mix your 8-track reel stuff down to stereo & record a simple wav file, for recording onto cd. That's very low-tech and common.
