Hi homerecording.com fellas! I'm 14 years old and my name is Bernardo Costa (yeah, I'm Portuguese). I got interested in recording relatively soon (two years ago) and I am really happy since then. It feels like recording isn't a hobby, I mean, I'm really keen on improving my recording skills everyday.

So I created this thread to introduce myself to the community, but to share my doubts too! :o

I guess I'll start with... the microphones, and how to use them /and/ the right plugins to use in the mix.

I know, I know, that there are loads and loads of threads explaining every microphone's utility, but I am limited to the gear I currently have, since it isn't right that I start spending my own money now instead of saving it to a future investment in a real studio. By "the gear I currently have", I mean my dad's gear. My dad has been collecting guitars, bass guitars, amps, pedals, and a lot of other gear like organs and pianos, and even drums since 1984, and now he has a wide collection of guitars (100+ guitars), and I have to say that every single guitar in our collection is outstanding (our collection includes a lot of Fender strats, teles, etc., and Gibson Les Pauls, ES-335, and another rare guitars from these brands and other trustful/top rated brands; and also amazing acoustic guitars [Ovation, Fender, Yamaha, Gibson, Martin, Taka...]). The same happens to bass guitars (some Fender Jazz Basses and P-Basses and also Fender Mustang, Telecaster Basses, and some from other brands like Lakland, Hofner), to the amps (2 Fender Studio Bass amps, Rumble Bass Amp, 1969 Vox AC30 and another Fender Classics (Twin Reverbs, etc.) including some amp heads combined with Fender speakers (like Vetta HDs. etc.), to the pedals (Blackstar HT Dual Pure Valve Distortion, a lot of Boss pedals, and loads and loads of vintage and classics like Cry Babies, Marshall's Drive Master, Classic Wah, etc.) and to the rest of the gear (Hammond B-3 with Leslie 122, a Pearl Drum Kit from the late 60's [it's AMAZING], a Yamaha CP-80, some Rhodes pianos and other Hammonds, and a Fritz-Kuhla piano [relatively unknown brand, huh?]).

Later (if needed), I'll tell y'all a little more about our gear and its history and share some pictures. :D

My point is, as you can see, one of the important parts about recording (the gear) is almost perfect; but, contrasting against the whole gear list, it seems I am not getting that sound, and I think everyone knows what I mean.

I am running Logic Pro, my machine is a 21.5" iMac with an 8GB processor and I never had any issues with the software and/or crashes. My recording chain, since I don't have any hardware like analog tape compressors or microphone preamps, is almost always Microphone - Fostex Recording Mixer 1850 (good preamps IMO) - Tascam US1641 - Computer.

I can't say that I get a bad sound, but it always sounds somehow "overcompressed".

So here are my questions, numbered (making it easier to answer, I hope):

1: What plugins should I use/are commonly used in the mix for every single instrument?
(I have a lot of Waves plugins available.)

2: My mixer has got 3-band equalizers on every channel, should I use them or should I use the mixer as a mic preamp only?

3: I don't have a pair of good overhead microphones. I am currently miking a crash and a ride with the same microphone (AT4040) and the hihat with another microphone (Fame C05, believe me or not, it sounds great!). Should I keep miking the drums this way or should I use two cheap overhead microphones I have so there will be stereo imaging?
(I also double the stereo in the cymbal track, and it sounds good.)

4: Is the following microphone application list according to what they were born for?

KICK: FAME MS112 IN, BARDL KICK DRUM MICROPHONE OUT (I believe that people listen to the sound, and not to the brands.. I know it's not an AKG D112 in or an U87 out, but..)
SNARE: SHURE SM57 TOP, SHURE SM57 BOTTOM
TOMS: SENNHEISER MD419 TOP
HIHAT: FAME C05
CYMBALS: AUDIO-TECHNICA AT4040

GUITAR AMPS: SHURE SM57; SENNHEISER MD419; SHURE SM57 + SENNHEISER MD419; SHURE SM57 + AT4040; SENNHEISER MD419 + AT4040

BASS AMPS: I USUALLY PREFER A DIRECT WARM SOUND, BUT IF I MIKE THE AMP I USE THE BARDL KICK DRUM MICROPHONE AND THE AT4040

VOCALS: AUDIO-TECHNICA AT4040

ACOUSTIC GUITAR: I FREQUENTLY USE SOME RANDOM MIXES OF THE AT4040, THE SM57 AND THE C05

HAMMOND ORGAN: USUALLY SM57 TOP, SM57 BOTTOM AND AT4040 IN THE MID-SECTION OF THE LESLIE SPEAKER;

ACOUSTIC PIANO: I NEVER MIKED IT, BUT I'LL DO IT SOON AND I MAY USE THE AT4040 OR THOSE CHEAP CONDENSER MICROPHONES TO TEST THE IMAGING;

That's it for today - sorry if my post was too long, but I'm an amateur in forums too :p

I made my best to write a comprehensible post, and I hope it wasn't bothering that i wasted some lines introducing myself to the community!

Cheers mates!

Can I also mix with headphones, and only take a later listen in the monitors? (Monitor One MKII + RA150 AMPLIFIER by Alesis) ?
