I'm just curious. I am of the understanding that mastering is finalizing a song. Now, do you do fade outs in the mixing process or do you do that during mastering? This is not start a war on whether or not you can DIY. I know I obviously can. Well, I wouldn't say what I do is even mixing. Haha! I merely track :D So, Mastering is something I would have someone else do...

I would leave the final fade in/out for the mastering stage. You may still do some fade outs or final mutes during the mixdown stage but it just depends on the song.

Thanks Tex, that sounds good. I am only recording on SoundBlaster and I don't want to do too many volume changes if there's really need. I will only mixdown for the purposes of HR's mp3 forum...

i say mix the song the way you want it --if you you want to
fade in/out- do it

and then you can have someone else master it or finalize it

yeah vicevursa!

i'd keep the fades for the mastering stage.
but whatever you do, rooooooooooooooooock!!!

unless, of course, you're writing ballads, jazz, country, folk, klezmer...

then you might not want to "rooooooooooooooooooooock"
