30/09/13 mix - vocals a little louder and the lead solo blended to show off the duality.
A little work on the drums and a tiny bit of mud removed from the stereo buss.
Phrasemaker,
I'm going to have to look at my set up. There's no reverb except on the vocals - & they came printed on, yet I've had comments about the excessive reverb on the last couple of projects I've posted. Hmmm, Maybe latency? I've scooped a little of the mid away & fiddled with the drums but the Band In The Box stereo track doesn't allow much scope.

Yeah, way better with vocals - getting Kev to do a shouty vocal was good - but they sound kinda muffled or boxy or something.

dobro,
Kev arrived with a set of vocals & a rough mix. he heard & had an idea - the shouty is all down to him & the mood he was in. We'll listen how the drier vox sound.
Greg_L,
I have a dry copy of the vox now & will try bedding that in. Replace the chime - can do with power chords of the same arrangement? Lifting the solo is no problem at all...thanks for the detail.
Llarion,
I shall try both those suggestions - thanks mate.

I know you've been busy with your new CD but I'm anxious to hear the change with vocals....when you get some free time :D

I like this tune. I'm not entirely sure what it reminds me of. I could throw out some comparisons that wouldn't quite fit (flip it i'll say bowie crossed with dandy warhols) but I'll say it's a sweet retro sounding tune. The mix sounds balanced. Drums are low in the mix to my ear or at least don't have a lot of punch to them but then that's not necessarily a bad thing for the genre. If you're going for a retro sounding tune then to my amateur ear, the mix sounds good. Could drive to this :)

They're not going for a retro sound. They *are* a retro sound. It's in their blood. But's it a retro sound you've never heard before. That's why you could drive to it.

Your Mix Ideas Applied.

I had a quick fiddle with the track this arvo.
I've followed most suggestions and you may find the sound a little grittier or rocky. I don't know if it worked - you'll tell me right.
Vox were the dry ones Kevin delivered & I only added a smidge of verb to them an some on the master buss too.

If you get a chance check out the Pygmy Beat album at the link in the signature.

Hmm not sure which mix I prefer. This latest one sounds punchier but preferred the spacier vocals on last one but then maybe this sounds punchier because of the more raw vocals on it... It's a tricky one. I don't think you should avoid the retro sound though. It's very cool. It's a track to cruise to with the top down on long american roads!

Turkeyoverlord,
I can't avoid the retro feel because the way I feel is retro because I am THAT old.
Thanks for your kind words though.
Kevin,
Pass me the spitoon and loan me your rockin' chair will ya, I had to ease my weary bones for a time.

Although I can make out the vocals, the rhythms on either side seem to be louder. Not sure if it's just me though. The tone on the rhythms is very nice. Also I would up the solo a bit and increase the high harmony line a bit. I like the ending better with this fade....

Yeah, I can hear the vocals better. You reduced what? Delay? Reverb? Both? An idea: instead of cutting delay/verb on the vocals, what about putting an EQ on the delay/verb and cut low end? I bet that would clear the sound a bit, and maintain some space and blend.

Hi Ray, I've just been listening to an early mix and a later one... I like the guitars better on this later mix... bit louder, more direct. But I think I liked the vocals better when they had the reverb/delay thing happening... sort of gave the song an entirely different feel... but needed to come out a bit for mine. Now I'm back listening to the mix dobro quoted... not sure which that is. Yep definitely prefer the effected vocals, but like the guitars on your last mix...

If that makes any sense!:D

But cracking tune.... really nice stuff.

Dobro,
K-Dub sent me a clean vocal - no effects at all for this mix.
The original affected version was pretty full on. I'll try for a middle ground.
I added a very little bit of reverb and dropped it i to fot levels wise.
Armistice,
I'll have a go at adding some of what K-Dub had on it but not as much & see how that goes. thanks for the kind words.
Ido1957,
I hadn't changed the blend on the guitars but the change in rhythms seemed to bury the harmony one so I'll boost that.

Their Majesties' Request: Effected Vox & Loud backing.

Hello folks,

By special request: the older heavily effected vocals with the new backing mix with the harmony lead guitar raised 5db.

Thoughts?

I like this latest mix a lot...The effected vocals sound more interesting. The solo is just right for me now :D.....

I listened to the 9/30 mix and it was a little messy. But now I'm listening to the one from 10/17 and it just sounds awesome. Miles ahead of the last one. The vocals stand out, the rhythm guitars are distinct and clear. The guitar lead/interlude is a little lost amongst everything. The backing vocals sound good to me too. I like everything about this mix!

The one from 10/18 loses a little of the distinct vocals to me...I liked 10/17 a little better. Maybe split the difference? Although 2nd verse sounds great to me. So it's growing on me as the song plays. Guitar interlude sounds great in this one.

Good song! I hear a little mid/late 70s Bowie influence in the guitar and bass parts, just something about the way it drives along.

I much prefer the 'un-reverbed' mix you put up on page 3. Vocals are in the face, guitars and drums sound great. Only question I've got now is around the vocal Eq, there seems to be a hint of a telephone about it, like too much has been cut from the top and bottom

It's a war between the effects & the dry folks.
Rack up your responses.

Dry all the way. And I like the new guitars much much better. The "effect" vocals are just way too much over-the-top for me. I'm a big believer in using vocal effects until you can hear them, and when you can hear them, it's way too much. Back it down. But really it's your call.

So what'd you use for the guitars? I like these better than the usual spacey guitars you go with. Those have their place, but for this song I think the more direct in your face guitars are better.
