JonnyC, I'm a drummer and am definately considering the DMP3 for micing my drums as well as other insturments. If you could post your findings on using the DMP3 with the bass drum and also mess around with 3Q's EQ and compression I'd like to see how you'd fare the two after that. Gonna get a mixer later, for immediate practicality I really feel this DMP3 could be worth it.

It can barely drive a SM57 vocal and register in the yellow LED zone with the gain knob on 9/10ths. The level is worse when going direct on electric guitars. The preamp is fairly clean, but it has no balls. A somewhat anemic direct box, imo.

I hope you are not referring to the 3Q? Assuming that it is an improvement over the MQ3 that I own, you would have to be doing something very wrong not to get signal out of that box, especially with your gain levels in the upper register. I'd look again at my setup if I were you.

I'll get on that this evening. Remember the dmp3 is two channels I'm sure everyone knows that, makes the purchase that much sweeter. I have a feeling the kick is going to sound like the kick thru the dmp3, to me it seems to very accurately depict the instrument. I'll let you know later this evening.

I couldnt resist hehe Ive tried already..
first impressions (joemeek ThreeQ) :

1)its really clean..even at highest gains noise level is acceptable

2)comp. works like a charm!

3)it aint colored as they say..I was expectin much..yeah It has its own sound.. I can say its slightly colored when compared 2 my old pre and other 1z I used (art tube, vtb-1, etc.)...
(I have no experience with high-end preamps)

4)you can really change how u sound with eq and comp.. I mean its not like havin only a mic preamp..

Im really satisfied and think I made the right choice..
thnx..

Wow, sounds like a toss up. Plus the added benefit of compression and EQ on the Meek. Can't wait to hear the results on the drums. Your conclusions would most likely inspire my decision as that you are a drummer and using these two preamps on the drums :)

I'm not a particularly high-end user, but I find the EQ on the threeQ to be so much more usefeul than on the various Soundcraft, Yamaha, Mackie and obviously Behringer desks I find myself using. The difference is that on, for example, my Soundcraft M12, you have to put 7 or 8dB on the HF to add a bit of air - with the threeQ I can add 1.5dB and get that sparkle without hyping anything else or increasing my noise floor dramatically. Whether that's because it's all bell curve filters rather than shelving ones, or if it's just a 'better' EQ, I don't know. But I can make much more subtle and appropriate changes that are actually audible without hoofing out a 15dB cut or boost!!

I happen to very much like what the compressor does for snare and bass drum too. :)

In some cases, people have the rear outputs set to -10, and not +4. This will loose 6dB of gain coming out the back....

So always check the threeQ rear outputs as there is a switch there to set the output for +4/-10. Maybe this will help but gain should not be a problem for the threeQ.... :)

I have a 3Q and have had it for about a year. I love it, it's crisp when you want it and the EQ is handy to fix anything with special needs. My only dissapointment is there is only one channel in this box.
For a guy working his way from the ground up why not? For the price, I'm gonna pickup a DMP3 also. For the value I guess the question isn't which one to buy, it's which one to buy first.
