Hey guys, I've been reading tweakz a lot lately and have noticed that i've been overlooking something for quite a while and since i've ready up on it im finding more and more references to it.

I've never focused on what i connect with especially in a live environment, and now that im dropping some big cash on another adopted baby (m-audio fast track ultra 8r) I'm starting to worry.

I plan on hooking it up to my mixer 8 outputs to the first 8 channels on my desk, the main outs for my monitors and the tape out on my desk (rca) back to the front of the interface on the instrument input (ts) most if not all of this through my patchbay, and as for the 8 inputs on the back i was gonna use 7 xlrs on channels 2-8 and a line in from my mic pre to the first channel, am i unbalancing any cables?

as i said i've done this before, (i never have enough cables at gigs and tend to use anything and lately ours drummers (well cajon player) has had his mic connected to the desk with an xlr to jack cable which is unballancing... isn't it?

I'm really getting confused here folks, any VERY SIMPLE ENGLISH advice would be amazing (and in studio i always go mic - xlr - mic in on desk or interface)

Anything that is/was or connects through RCA or TS is (or will be made) unbalanced.

even if it goes back to XLR? and will I need a F**K load of gain to get to get a good signal off microphones?

Um I just skimmed your setup path there so half that story is if you dropped to un-balanced somewhere, a mixer or pre out or such could still out put it again balanced.
