its about 15 minutes and is all instrumental.
i played all the guitar and keys, well i say i played all the keys, more like played and then edited the crap out of. Wink

The drums were done with Drumkit from hell superior and the bass with Spectrasonics Trilogy.

all feedback or is greatly appreciated.
thanks for taking the time too listen. Smile

Looks like this is gonna take quite some time to listen too!! :p

I'll get back to you a little later.

listening now......about 7:00 in...

Good sounds. Guitars are real heavy. Synths sound good in the background.
In my opinion the guitars are somewhat too loud. Drums seem pretty pushed to the back by the guitar. It's obviously a very guitar driven song but the drums being too buried seems to make it lack power. It's one of those mixes where you want to turn it up to get more punch from the drums but all you can get is more guitar...you know what I mean?
I think the lead guitar at around 8:00 should be brought up.
Riff at 11:50 is great (the return of an earlier riff) That stop and go segment at just after 12:00 is really cool, Symphony X all the way! :p
The ending is just beautiful. Great guitar lines.

Okay time for some recap and overall impressions....
1. Great composition! Really good playing and feel.
2. I dig the subtle sound of the keys. Doesn't even approach the ever-to-be-avoided "cheese" factor!
3. I would like to hear a more "raw" sort of edge to the guitars, especially in certain places (like the riffs I had mentioned before) I guess I am imagining the Symohony X "Odessey" type of guitar sound for this stuff. Even though I'm sure you are after your own sound which is still cool!
4. MORE LEAD GUITAR!....I know, I know, I am a lead guitar junkie but this song is just screaming for it!
5. Bring the drums up alot (or bring the guitars down, this track is pretty loud) and beef up that kick alot. Give this track some punch and some power!
6. Post more music cause this is great stuff!

Thanks alot for taking the time to listen and reply :)

symphony x is actually the guitar sound i was trying to model my sound after, specifcaly twighlight in olympios, i think my guitar tone is going to be an ever evolving project.

4. MORE LEAD GUITAR!....I know, I know, I am a lead guitar junkie but this song is just screaming for it!

yup, my next few songs will have more, trust me :D
i dont know why this song dosnt have too much, i guess it just worked out that way.

Bring the drums up alot (or bring the guitars down, this track is pretty loud) and beef up that kick alot. Give this track some punch and some power!

ill have a mess around, see what i can do.
The kick is the area i had great trouble with and i am not satisfied with it. getting it too sound good wasnt the problem, no matter what i tried i just couldnt get the damm thing to stand out in the mix

Do you ever try bussing maybe the kick and snare together, compressing the hell out of it and adding it into the mix along with the original drum tracks? Sometimes that helps me bring them more out front.....I am no engineer, so take it with a grain of salt... ;)
Often I would tend to start with the drums (making them as big and punchy as I can) and then bring the guitars and bass up around them while making sure I wasn't squashing anything down to where it got weak in the mix. Also this track is really loud, I think you could tweak some levels alot in the mixing stage to keep the drums powerful and that kick up front. Definitely listen to your mix on some smaller speakers and things like that if you don't already, because that will really tell you something about unbalanced levels. For instance on my small pc speakers (which actually do sound pretty good) at low volumes you almost can't hear your drums at all. As opposed to some comercial mixes (especially prog metal stuff) the kick stays very present even at the slightest volume. Another tip which may or may not work for you, but it works for me - I like the guitars to sound good when you really crank it up! At lower volumes the drums will be really powerful but because of the transient response of the drums, at higher volumes they don't really take up that much more space. As opposed to guitars being a really full midrange sound which just gets bigger and bigger at higher volumes. Get those drums to sound good at low volumes, because people will crank it up to get that huge guitar. I hope that makes sense, it works for me.

Very epic. I like that, The strings do work great. What'd you use for the strings?

I defenitly agree about the drums, they are really covered up. You gotta bring 'em out more.

Overall, i'm feeling there should be some more hi-end, especially on the guitars.

Did i mention i love the epicness? :p

the thing is, ive already compressed the hell out of the kick. what you said made alot of sense about the drums, ill give it a shot.

What'd you use for the strings?

Garritan personal orchestra and a nice impulse i found to use with S.I.R reverb.

Overall, i'm feeling there should be some more hi-end, especially on the guitars.

Really, i already added a bit of high end to it all after playing it on all my stereos and finding it was a little dull, anymore and i would have thought it would get a bit harsh?

Did i mention i love the epicness?

thanks, i was going for that epic kinda chorus.

Wow....this is epic....both in length and sound. I think most of the minor issues have been adressed, so I just wanted to listen, and tell you what I hear....A cool tune. Very cool. It has so much sound in it, I'd love to hear a higher bitrate of this. I don't think the 128k MP3 does it justice. You have put a lot of work into this. I like it... :D
Thanks.
Ed

The composition and playing is damn awsome dude. I really think the drums need to come up, the kick and snare are really far back. It may just be getting drowned out from the loudness of the synths and guitar. Did you add any EQ or Compression to your drums?

Also, how is Trilogy? I was looking at it a while back, but I wasn't sure how many different styles of bass or how good it would work out for me.

yeah, i cant find anywhere large enough to host it though, i already had a problem finding somewhere to host it at 128k, its just too big.

haha, i added a ton. i got a really great snare sound to my ears, i could bring that up a bit but the kick needs alot of work.

i havnt experimented too much with it but it seems ok. it still lacks a little realism though, especially in the type of music i do where the bass plays a fairly big roll. i think being a good keys player would help alot though, being able to play the parts rather than programing them in. it has alot of different style basses in there, acoustic(sounds great), 4-6string,slap,sythn and a few others. im sure with a little more work though you could probably get it sounding great.

I just got to say I really enjoyed the song and agree with others on the drum part being a little light.

cool...

sounds cool. I'll be downloading it to my player to hear it better/more. I really enjoy finding all the great DIY songs on this site.

Great guitar sounds and song dynamics!

People are complaining about the drums, but if you go turning them up, then the may sound too fake. I realize drums on demand are real drums sampled or whatever, but you go turning them up, then it may be more evident that it's a program/samples. I love to bury "fake" drums with a wall of guitars. No sense calling attention to samples. The guitars are where it's at cause it's all you...

My only negative comment is in the beginning, the heavy chunk stop pattern thing sounds just like the beginning of a song I have on a prog metal comp. I think the band is Tad Morose, but I don't know the song name. It's like the exact same riff. I'm sure it's not directly lifted, but that's one of those deals where it may have seeped into your subconscious and you didn't even realize it was from another band. Perhaps not.

WOW............I can see why it took you 4 months.
I listened to the whole thing.......so thats a good start lol.
This goes in my keep folder! Everyone else has pretty much addressed the mix issues so I won't repeat. Get Those drums up there so we can hear them!!
Great playing......you shred dude! Im jealous

I will be waiting for a repost of this baby when its done!

nope, never heard of them or that song before, probably just one of those things. all the good riffs are taken :( (mostly by Dream Theater)

as for the drums, i shall remix them tommorow, they should sound good when turned up a little, its a really great program DKFHS

good job man...
sounds very good..
most issues have allready been covered, so I`ll just comment the song.
very nice build up, cool soloing.
nice and varied themes.
Yes the works.

:)

oooooohhhh if you made those drums bigger you would have won

I'm liking this. That riff at 2:10 made me stop what I was doing and pay full attention. I NEED to hear a better quality version of this song. Get some free webspace somewhere and register a domain at dottk or something. Unfortunately, there's no place to split the song up so you can have 2 high quality splits up.

From a technical aspect, aside from what everyone else has said, I think the bass sits a bit high in the mix. Also, that drum fill before the first solo (8:10 or so) really exposes the drums, so maybe EQ them a bit on the low end, esp. the toms, which I think need to have more boom.

All around, I'm impressed. I'd love to hear more of you.

im not sure how to do it but ill look into it.

i had the bass at a good level for my monitors but when i tried it on my small crap computer speakers i couldnt hear it, it was also barley audible on my other cheapish cd players and cheap earphones.
i had to make a compromise, so its a bit loud on my monitors and car cd player but just about right on most of my other systems.

i have eq'd ALOT on the drums, the other problem i forgot to mention was along with getting the kick to stand out, i was also having trouble getting the toms to stand out. im a bit stuck on those two problems.

LOL, i just read your signature, brilliant :D
