Cool story - I never knew you were a Neil fan. I brought TelePaul to see him around his fourteenth birthday (TelePaul's, not Neil's).

My Dad's music taste sometimes comes close to mine - we went to see Buena Vista Social Club, Bruce Springsteen and Kris Kristofferson together. He hates Dylan, Tom Waits and the blues, though, and I can't quite see the attraction of Status Quo. :confused:

Anyway, it's good that your father supported you in becoming a luthier - i imagine that sometimes parents get a little worried when their kids do something that could be seen as 'unusual.'
 
My daughter is the lovely young lady playing bass. check out her band The apocalyptics I love it that my kids are good musicians. I always gave them the best gear I could afford, and supported them in whatever direction they went with it.

That's really neat. Perhaps someday she'll graduate to a Precision....
 
Thanks to you guys for the kudos for parenting skills. Sometimes I feel absolutely lost as a parent, and my eldest in particular presents me with challenges weekly. We stumble along and do the best we can. :)

I would love it if my daughters would express interest in learning to play an instrument - any instrument - but so far no luck.

I did see a glimmer of hope for my youngest, who is 14. After I recently received my new LP I was showing it to her. She was sitting on our bed, so I put the guitar in her lap, and said, "Here." She smiled and plunked around a bit and said, "Show me how to play something." So I postioned her fingers for a standard E chord, got her to fret it cleanly, and she was able to strike a clean chord. The look on her face was priceless. :) :)

This brings up a point that has been causing me to shake my head a bit these days. You are all prob familiar with this game called 'Guitar Hero'. My 2 sons and 2 stepsons can spend 8 hours straight on this thing, having a ball and definitely getting good at it. But I watch them and watch the time and effort they put into the finger coordination and wonder why this effort cant be put into an instrument. But I guess its a game, and learning an instrument is learning an instrument. Any one else having this experience or have any views on this phenomenon?
 
Yeah, the whole "Guitar Hero" thing bothers me a little. I don't know why...it's a game, not musicianship. I guess it's because it seems to promote style over substance.

it mamkes me uneasy as well. instead of learning the musical art, kids (and adults) are just going to play guitar hero.

If it'll make ya feel any better, I'm shit at guitar but if your daughter wants to worship me, I'm cool with that. I'm doing this as a favour to you, you understand that right?

And there is the rub.

When the some of the most visible music acts are mediocre singers that require heavy-duty electronic help in the studio, and are backed up by professional dance troupes and piped-in vocals when performing live to hide the fact that they just can't sing.........it becomes obvious that style can trump substance any day of the week.
 
As much as it can be outrageous, South Park recently had a new episode about this, and a rather poignant commentary on the game was made, when one of the kids was introduced to a supposed "Guitar Hero Master", at a luncheon, and the Master of the game pulled out his control, and was asked to play a particular song you can play along to in the game... he proceeded to sit there, clicking away at the controller, in otherwise complete silence.

I nearly pissed myself watching that. Then someone at another table in the restaurant held up a lighter :D

This just speaks to the larger problem that I experience with other young adults and kids, that they don't want to put the time in on anything... playing guitar hero is fun NOW, as opposed to the years of practice it takes to become even mediocre at playing a real instrument (for most, anyway, I guess some of you might have been virtuosos when you first started out...).

my kids can't play guitar hero acoustically yet but they're working on it.:D

ah, i see. when i think style i usually think of guitar players...those who have it anyway. =] i hate that pop-dance-lip-sync crap and usually relate that to a lack of substance, style, and talent. ;-]

that's what they said about the kid who could play GH without the game machine...he was playing acoustically.:eek:
