first of all let me get this straight...

Send effects are for things like Compressors right?
Insert Effects are for things like Delays right?

or do i have that backwards?

ok, i must be smoking crack or something...actually i'm probably just usuing it wrong, but when i try and use the Delay or reverb effects (as send effects) that came with my cubase LE, I get these whirling type sounds. i thought i was supposed to use them as send effects, but no matter what i tweak (including the presets) i end up with something that doesn't even resemble the desired effect. I'm literally just trying to apply the delay effect as an insert on a track and it sounds like nothing i've ever heard. almost like if you were to pump the sound through a sea shell...that airy sound like wind whipping through toilet paper tube. basically nothing like a delay. the Send effects seem to work perfectly fine...as far as i can tell. I've been recording for a long time and have just started using Cubase through my Presonus Firebox and into my mac. I'm guessing i'm just using the plugin wrong or something.

does anyone have any clue that the hell i'm doing wrong?!

thanks!

yep, backwards.

Dynamics plugs should be inserts, everything else is a send. It should not really matter though since most plugins have a wet/dry control so you should be able to use everything as an insert.

What plugin is giving u the problem

hey thanks!

it appears to be (and i've really only tried it on a couple) the Delay (double i think) and the reverb. i must be doing something seriously wrong cuz it almost seems to change very little in sound the more i tweak...not to mentino it just sounds wrong. like i said. like this kind of high pitched whirling of air sound. i could be way off here, but i'm guessing the Double Delay should not sound like that.

It's simple - If you want to change the core of the sound (such as dynamics control, EQ, etc.), insert it. If you want to add to the core of a sound (reverb, echo, etc.), send it.

There's also a middle ground on both sides - There are times when a compressor would be used as a send effect - And with modulation effects, sometimes a send would be less usefull than a 100% wet insert. It depends on what the end game is.

thanks guys.

for some reason i feel like i did it right and maybe just said it backwards (send and insert) then. either way, can you guys think of any reason this may be happening?

If the effect is on it's own buss it's run fully wet, the the aux level and buss level being the wet-dry mix points. Insert', then use the effect's mix control of course. But getting those wrong can dilute what ever you've got going.

like i said. like this kind of high pitched whirling of air sound. i could be way off here, but i'm guessing the Double Delay should not sound like that.
No clue on this one. :) Can you solo the effect?

thanks guys. i'm going to have to screw with it a bit more when i get time, but what ever i'm doing is wrong. when i'm on it, i'll try and take a few notes as to my settings, cuz this is killing me. so far i've only used it to take rough ideas for songs, but at some point i'd like to use it for more than a taperecorder.

this weekend i'll be screwing around with it for sure.
