I threw this thing together last night. It's 15" x 16" x 25" and loaded with a 65 watt 8 ohm Carvin VL10. I have a buddy that needs to record under a more "live" setting. The guy in charge of the project wanted to take the line out of his amp straight into the board. Pft! that'll sound good! :rolleyes: So anyway, here's what I came up with to fix the problem. I have been trying different amps through this iso cab and a 30 watt class A tube amp dimed is just slightly louder than a normal TV. The tone takes some EQing to get it to sound right on tape but I think over all it should work out great for recording in certain situations.

This is uncanny. I've been toying on paper to build something simular. I want to put together an iso-box that'll fit around an average 4-12" cab (as that would be the worst case scenario) except with a window and a remote way to move the mic so you can see where it's pointing and make adjustments on the fly. Looks very cool sir.

I think it sounds decent on tape. It isn't anything like the normal close mic/distant mic technique I use but all on all It sounds great. I think absolutely cranking a tube amp is always a good way to get guitar tones.With a 30 watt Class A Tube amp dimed it's slightly louder than my TV.
 
i bought a Demeter isolation cab, and ripped out the dacron polyester sound treatment that came with it, and attached auralex-type foam throughout the interior...

the 2" wedge foam made a huge improvement...... though it's exceedingly dry sounding, you can place effects on the sound at mixdown.

it had a 65 watt vintage 30 in it, i took it out and replaced it with a lower wattage eminence legend 122, and that was the deal.
 
anouying noob question what are these iso cabs for i dont get what they do
 
I don't have a camera handy, but i'm converting a roadcase trunk that right now houses a BS practice combo (I just pulled the head portion out of it to rackmount - somehow). The trunk is on hard rubber casters that sit on additional blocks of rubber to further decouple it from the floor, then the whole thing will be inside of a as yet to be built booth that will double for vocals. The idea being if i want a different mic'd sound i can pull the combo out and crank it in the booth, but if it's late or i need a more isolated approach (For example if i'm doing live drums and a guitar track at the same time) I can use it in the trunk inside of the booth. Either way, I'm hoping to get a nice cranked up and mic'd tone once i find a sweet little tube amp.

im planning on building one too.

im going to make a 1x12" speaker cab with a closed front and back and foam, with a goosneck and a 57.

im going to probably use a nice celestion and hook it up to the ext. speaker out on my fender hot rod deluxe.
 
Great stuff. I'm planning one of these as well.

Planning one large enough to put a 2x12 in but having trouble deciding how large to go in order to try to avoid ending up with a strange boxy sound. Was thinking 36" x 36" by 30" built out of either 1" MDF or 2 layers of 3/4"MDF glued and screwed together

How's your box sounding. Any clips?

Isolating Iso-Cab

Hi! I bought a custom made Isocab, but I'm not happy about it's isolation, because, even if it reduces the overall volume, it's still quite loud..
Infact there's only some cheap isolation tissue in the mic's cabinet and nothing in the speaker one. So I think i could isolate it better.
What kind of foam should I use? Auralex? Should I put it in the speaker cabinet also, or it will make the cab sound worse?

all aurelex does is soak up highs.

if you want real attenuation, go for rock wool.
