Im recording vocals on a Shure SM57 onto CEPro.

The end result is great but it doesn't have much bass to it. I dont want to EQ it in CE, but I would rather fix the problem as Im recording. I am 100% broke(and in college) so I dont have the option to get a preamp for my mic.

Could I do this...

Plug the mic into the Input of my guitar amp. Then play around with the EQ settings on the amp and run a cable from the output to my soundcard.

Wouldn't that basically be the same as a preamp?

any thoughts?

how far away are you when you sing into the 57?

Try getting right on top of it. With my 58, I find that I have to remove some bass when I am right on top of it.

the 58 does add low end more than the 57.

Im about 1" away'

I wouldn't put it through your gtr pre amp - the eq in the preamp for guitar is very severe, (compare the direct sound from the gtr to the sound from the amp, alot of top end boost).

The 58 and 57 are the same mike just the 58 has a windshield,

They are both designed to be close miked and have allowed for the proximity effect (bass boost) you get when up close.

I'd just EQ it in CEP.

cheers

yeah and that $200 Fender sounds just like a Les Paul..... :D ;)

I think a good pair of studio monitors should be on your gear wish list

ok enough insults....

first, what are you running the sm58 into...you mentioned you cant afford a preamp?....if you are going straight from the mic to the soundcard, i think i would try the guitar amp.....

also, pull the windscreen off and get right up on it but i would think 1" from a 58 should be ok and your problem may be preamp related....

What kind of guitar amp do you have? I've run vocals through an old (50's) amp that has nothing but a clean sound to it, but that was just as an effect. And I miced it too, as it doesn't have a direct out. I'm guessing the direct out is going to add quite a bit of "brittleness" to the high end. I say go for it!
