Is this a good deal?

There's a pair of "modified" NS10s on Ebay using a NS-A636 cabinet and tweeter (see link for more details) and I was wondering what you guys thought of them and if I should try to grab them. They appear to be very well done from what I can tell from their explainations and the pictures. There's 24hrs left to bid, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

They're up to $150 now, how much to the "regular" NS10s go for? Is this still a good deal? Or should I just pass on these (and not because they play cheesy keyboard music) and wait for the real things? But I'm thinking I'm going to need to get a pair of these "soon" before they get really hard to find and the price goes sky high.

New NS10's are not much more, around $500 Canadian, so what ever that works out to USD. Around $300 I guess. I'd pass on this deal Tekker, especially being 'modified'.


NS10's may be getting hard to find, but these monitors are frankensteins.. sorta like replacing all the pickups, hardware on a 59 LP, a bit of rebinding and having a bad fret job on top....

I thought they discontinued the NS10 line, I didn't think you could still get them new. Do you know of any places that still carry them?

All thought they did say "professionally modified" and they sounded like they knew what they were doing, plus they also offer a 15 day money back garrantee. But I agree on the frankenstein theory, I mean why mess with perfection.

But that's the reason why I started this post.

Yeah they are discontinued for sure. If you did enough phoning around I'm sure you could fine a pair eventually.

I used NS10's for a few years, but sold them. Not because I didn't like them, needed the cash. I had them hooked to my tv for the longest time. Their a good set, but their are lots of alternatives in that price range these days. I'm using the 2020's now, their good enough, the NS10's were more focused/tighter sounding IMO. The endless monitor threads on here, which I'm sure you've read, illustrate the broad range of opinions on what monitors to use.

But, if your going to buy used NS10's, I wouldn't buy ones that have not been 'modified', pro modified or otherwise.

I had had my mind set on getting the Yorkville YSM1ps when they came out, but hearing all this talk on the NS10s and how accurate and unforgiving they were got my curiousity going. And sense they were becoming very hard to find I figured I'd try to grab a pair before they became extinct. But I wasn't sure if I wanted a "modified" pair, especially being placed in a bigger box with a tweeter, that's would probably defeat the whole purpose of the having the accurate NS10s in the first place.

What would be a good price for them if I ever come across them (the real ones) on Ebay again? I saw some on Digibid going for $180 (and still going up probably) how much higher would still be in the "good deal" catigory?

I sold mine for $300 Canadian 8 years ago... lets see that's about $180 USD. They were in perfect condition. Being 2001, I wouldn't pay more than $130 USD or around $200 for a mint condition pair. What's mint? Who knows with speakers...

But, their just speakers. Again, lots of options, pick a pair and go with it. You can use anything to monitor and mix, just have to learn how it translates to other speakers, but there is no magical speaker that's gonna do that for you. I'm sure you've heard that line before. Just buy it, whatever it is and go at it.

them or any passive monitor you choose.

Take a look at the powered monitors. You get a little
versatility with them and of course, you are gonna be referencing
everything you do on other playback systems anyway.

That's what I've heard and that they also cause ear fatigue so they're difficult to listen to for long periods of time. I do plan on getting other monitors (Yorkville YSM1p "actives") but I just wanted to get these first, before they became impossible to find (I can get the YSM1ps anytime, so there's no hurry on these just yet......except for the fact that I WANT them REALLY badly ).

That's another thing, I had a really nice 100 (?) watt power amp (not really for studio monitors but it would probably work for now) but it broke a while ago. I'm going to take it down to Guitar Center and see if they can fix it, when (if) I ever get some passive monitors (or just a need for it in general).

Of course, but it'd be nice to have a good place to start, and from what everyone's been saying, if you get it to sound right on the SN10s then it'll sound right everywhere.....that's just to good to pass up!!

I just picked up a pair (arrived tuesday) from Brook Mays Music (www.brookmays.com)...I believe they have more in stock, but I would search for a lower price and use their guarantee thingy. I am extremely pleased with these monitors, and after about 15 minutes I had an old rough mix sounding damn tight. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
