Is this a common RNC issue for you guys?

Feeding my RNP just before clipping, going out into the RNC, I find that with RNC set at 0 threshold, and the ratio at about 2/1, that I am still grinding off about 5-6db gain reduction. Is this common? Seems it shouldnt be getting hit at all at that point unless the RNPS output is really super hot.
Any comments? What could the deal here be?
 
Ive got RNC patched into my ME-1NV and the compressor is triggered by the input level of the GR and not the output (im pretty sure). So when I had the threshold at -2, my GR input level well below 0 and my output on the GR was at 0, I wasn't getting much, if any, reduction. I had to turn down the threshold way down to match the input level of the GR to do any reduction. Does this help at all, or am I on crack again? So maybe your RNP gain is high/output low and the RNC is "seeing" the input gain? Now that I said this, it doesn't make any sense that a compressor read the input gain of a preamp, but the output, right? Like I said...........crack.
 
Correct Tubedude. You should lose a little gain because it's an unbalanced unit. That's why God gave you make up gain.-Richie
 
No, I'm not exactly talking about losing signal level, I'm talking about the actual gain reduction done by the compressor and showing on the meters. I cant adjust the compressor low enough to where it ISNT showing 2-3 db gain reduction on the gain reduction meter when the preamp is just shy of clipping.
Seems at zero, that I should get nothing on the meters until I start to move the threshold. Am I wrong?

Phosphene- its not reading the input gain of the preamp... I'm setting my input signal at the preamp to be just shy of clipping, then running out of the preamp to the compressor, where I am encountering the "problem" Which really isnt a problem at all, really, I'm really actually just curious about this particular trait. Technically though it is reading the output. I havent been using it as an insert but just directly out. Maybe I should.

if it was Odbfs but its 'analog zero' which may vary greatly between products. Most say its around -18 to -14 db on the digital scale...hope that helps....

Gain structure..........

As Teacher pointed out 0dBFS is about 15dB hotter than a +4dBu signal at 0 VU.

You sure your levels are what you think they are, Paul?
 
Not if the max threshold is +20 and the RNP shows +28 out balanced, +22 unbalanced... assuming you're calling +20 '0' .
 
Hey Tube, if it's just a matter of stopping the compression without having to unplug it, just set the ratio to zero.
