my opinion: do whatever it takes to get the sound good on tape. don't put something to tape if it sounds bad. i try to move the mics or the instrument or change the mics before eq'ing. if I couldn't get the sound I want but through eq'ing I can get it, then hell yeah I'm gonna eq it. does it sound the way you want it to? the answer is either yes, so record it, or no, so do something about it. how you go about getting the sound you want isn't important. just make sure you get it.
