Is there a web based community of musicians/home recordists that network and share their music and performing? By this I mean a group of musicians who will lay tracks for each other at very low or no cost. Also, share their music for critiuqe and appreciation?

How would such a group manage cross-platform recording?

It's not the sole purpose of HR, but that sort of thing definitely goes on here.
Probably more between friends than anything.

That definitely goes in here. The MP3 mixing clinic is the place to be for critique and appreciation.
Can't have one without the other though.

Do you mean the logistics of file sharing?
I have a server that I upload to.
The site has a built in mp3 attachment system that I see people using.
A LOT of people use soundcloud in the clinic. The site allows soundcloud embedding with these tags (no spaces).

There are other filesharing systems like dropbox that are better suited to wavs etc.

The only thing to manage is the start point of your recordings. If you send me a stereo WAV of your song and ask me to record lead guitar, make sure you bounce your session from 0:00:00, or at least a known grid point.
I'll start my recording from the start of your wav, and then when I return it it's easy for you to line up.

That actually does help some. I am a pretty descent keyboardist, and would like to participate in such projects. Not really sure how to get started. I guess I need a couple of guys to let me record for them and measure up my skills. Any ideas on how going about that? How would I get the word out there that I am interested in doing so?

I need some one to play bass and guitar tracks for me.

There are probably forums dedicated to this but I guess they'd operate on a much less personal level.
A classified adds sort of thing.

If you're interested in trying your luck here, just get involved and get to know people.
You can figure out who's active and who's not by browsing through the clinic and looking at the 'mix this' forum.

Don't be afraid to talk to people and just ask.
I know some guys around here are running a business and may not be interested in 'fun' collaborations.
Others will be dying for the opportunity.

Maybe pitch your skills in the clinic?

If you don't already know, 'mix this' isn't a place to get your music mixed for free;
It's a place to submit raw sessions of your songs so others can have the benefit of mixing them for experience.

I think a dedicated collaboration forum in here wouldn't be incredibly busy, but it'd be worth having.

Maybe if you got a tune you'd like help/collab on you could put it in drop-box & those interested (ME for one) could upload a contribution of what you need,, I play acc/bass,, then you could choose what you want to use?

It wouldn't, unless someone pitched the idea to the site administrator and convinced them it had merit. For that to happen, you'd need form and to demonstrate that there was already enough activity to warrant yet another forum.

Join a song writers forum. There's lots of collars going on there. Plus there's a software I forget the name of that's aimed at live and recorded collaborations. Good luck.
